Halfords Profesional Torque wrench
« on: 11 March 2012, 13:38:34 »

I needed a torque wrench for doing the inner balljoint @ 26 lbf ft so I bought a 3/8 Halfords Professional Torque wrench 8 to 60Nm (6-45 lbf.ft.) around a year ago at £70 as Halfords pro range come with a lifetime guarantee so I thought, well what a load of SH*T.
I was using it the other week to do my cam cover bolts & the circlip came off & the ratchet part fell apart so took it in today with my proof of purchase to exchange it only to be told WE DON'T REPLACE ANYTHING THAT HAS MOVING PARTS & THAT INCLUEDS RATCHET SPANNERS & SOCKET RATCHETS so I would've been better buying a cheap one & if it breaks just sling it away then get another.
I could have rammed it down his throat smug TW*T & having a TC meant nothing to him.
Not happy  >:( >:( >:(

That is the only point where Snap Off/Mac tools guarantee makes better sense, although they don't cover the pin on a breaker bar or air tools on lifetime ::)

To the OP, if it was just the circlip, can you not put it back together yourself? :-\ :-\ Also, exactly when did you buy it? Less than a year and you can go for the "Sale of Goods Act" (not fit for purpose) and they will have to replace it ;) I'd advise a complaint to the store manager, or escalate it up the chain as I reckon that if it's under 18 months old you might well get some joy ;)

Except a cheap, badly calibrated torque wrench can be worse than no torque wrench at all :-\

I would've done but one of the pins inside got lost, & it was the manager I was dealing with. My main gripe is that they shouldn't be allowed to sell it under the Professional tool name if it's not covered by the lifetime guarantee >:(

Its not a 'wear' failure though, so should be covered.

Try a Halfords Shop, on a weekend when the Saturday Guys are in, Ive swooped 2 Ratchets so far in a shop where the main Store keep saying No.

Tip, if the shop says not in stock, go to a Store, ask them to order you a replacement.

Why not buy a real professional torque wrench like snap on

If it does break the man in the big van comes round and replaces it

Better than arguing the toss with Halfords when company policies come into effect

If the circlip failed and was the direct cause of failure of internal parts, then it should be covered surely? If it was me I would be getting Trading Standards involved >:(

Sounds like a bit of bastardness to me  >:(

I'd, like others have suggested, write them a complaint letter threatening legal action and see how you get on.

Funny, someone mentioned Snap-on.............. i was speaking to my mate's dad at the weekend who said that Snap-on, laser (i think) nand halfords expert are basically all the same thing just undre different brands. Anybody agree with that?

I personally wouldn't even attempt to write letters of complaint to Halfords with them being such a large company as you'll just go round and round in circles with them and end up being back at square one. You'll just get messed about.
I agree that snap-on and the halfords range are pretty much the same thing but i've owned snap-on tools and they're definately stronger, you'd get a replacement straight away so i'd opt for them over halfords, but thats my personal opinion :)
