« on: 17 March 2012, 21:43:15 »

Viewing the recently posted piccies of a 2007 meet got me thinking of how times have changed over these recent times financially and otherwise.

Work situation for most being the main change, your experiences??

Work's still steady I'm one of the lucky ones. My mates business is struggerling, another friend lost his job but did manage to find another without to much difficulty (pretty specialist field) and friends Dad got taken for a lot of money when a firm went under without paying him. He may now lose his pub as he's seen takings drop as well. So yep it's pretty pants out there if you want a job

Funnily enough, I was clearing out my email inbox yesterday. I keep business ones for years, but need to have a clear out occasionally.

I came across this:

main change for me is work its been very slow and the prices are well down . in honesty earning now what i did 15 years ago but things seem to be picking up. I do think the building trades have been breaked over the years with so many regulations, H&S issues and gen standard of apprenterships etc

The foriegn workers have not helped sure credit to them they work hard for little money but uk residents can not work for that sort of money the bills would not get paid

fortunatley i have a good name and some regular clients that have kept me going but seen so many good trades men leave the industry

anyway if i say anymore it will be an Albs party political braodcast ;D ;D

Couldn't agree more. At the time of the 2007 meet I was earning a very good wage, I was married and had no worries. Now i'm on the bones of my arse and divorced  ;D ;D but the only way is up as they say, just wish it would hurry up ;D

Was earning almost double what Im earning now.Now earning the same as I was earning 20 years ago, with a very noticeable fuel bill for commuting, which I never had before.
On the bright side - I used to feel phsically sick when I got up to go to work in the morning. Now I dont mind it at all. Just feel sick when I feel brave enough to look at the bank balance. ::) ;D

Was a student at Uni then, now doing rather well in a well known TV broadcasting company, learnt to snowboard, ride a motorbike, travelled to some fantastic destinations abroad, bought a flat in London, met MrsT!

So quite a few changes  ;D

Been a big struggle since the recession, but things are very slowly improving.

This country is facing ever increasing cheap competition from abroad with software development as code can be developed and uploaded to a server from anywhere in the world. More and more companies are realizing they can save development costs by doing this.

There are several major global project / developer matching websites, where going rates are $10-20 per hour, with money being safely held in escrow accounts, until the customer accepts the milestone or the completed software. These sites are dominated by Indian, South American and East European developers as they can afford to work for these hourly rates.

In 20 years time I think UK software development will be as common as UK shipyards building merchant vessels. There will still be small niche suppliers like their are for boats, but that's all.

This is also reflected that the UK's global percentage of computer games developed here, has been and is continuing to decline. The main countries benefiting from this are France and Canada due to large tax breaks and new studios (many owned or part owned by the big publishers) in Eastern Europe, South America and some Asian countries.
