New front door time...
« on: 20 March 2012, 20:00:10 »

UPVC -v- Composite......Discuss  ;D

Our old wooden door is knackered, along with 2 old wood windows, and needs replacing.

Composite is coming in about £250 more than UPVC, and seems to offer a nicer look (and colour range), and heavier weight.

Any good reasons to go for one over the other?  Dont know a lot about them.

UPVC here, front back and side! Just as long as you have at least a 5point locking system and a good euro cylinder it's style that sets them apart (and and bit of build quality).

My opinion as a PVCu fitter. Composite, greater longevity, more secure, UV resistant as opposed to the reinforced panels in PVCu which discolour over time. As Rob says, at least a 5-point lock mech + an anti-drill/pick/snap eurocylinder as standard

White is the main culprit, but even with the foil "woodgrain" (rosewood, mahogany, light oak) over time the panel tends to split especially if they have raised mouldings

Avocet abs is the best on the market at the moment.. The standard euro cylinders can be broken in 30 secs and after that it doesn't matter how good your locking system is.

Faced the same issue pre-xmas and went with composite - and happy with it. The door feels more solid, looks better and has less chance of fading. With different colours available it reallys adds something to the front of the house. I appreciate it costs more but if you can then go for it as it gives the face of your property a nicer look which even subconciously will add value to your house in the eye of any potential future buyers. Just haggle them harder on the price!

15 years ago you were faced with either upvc or wood as alternatives. Nowadays i believe most people do go with the composite option going by houses near me.

Ask yourself if you went for upvc, every time you looked at it would you wish you went for the composite option.
