Hi all,

Firstly let me start by stating that this is NOT a 'for sale' thread. I haven't made up my mind if I'm doing either yet, or if I'm even selling it at all as I'm still using it daily. So please no comments on 'how much you want' etc. Forum rules etc

I want so opinions from other members and ideally breakers on here.

I have a 2001 2.6 - all is good with the car and a year or so ago it would have been worth £1300-1600 but realistly it's not worth it now I know.

Having looked on here in the parts section I see that I could probably make close to £1k if I broke it.

Sad state of affairs but I want to recover as much as poss from my mig - naturally.

What model?

From experience, I can say that breaking a car is a right pain. You needs space for the dismantling and lots of space for the parts you remove. Then you advertise and folk say they will have stuff and then don't.

CDX cream leather complete, 17'' alloys, 80k miles very clean bodywork.

I have the room, double drive and garage to store it all - just going to feel gutted if I break it as it's a good runner. Had it of been smacked or nackered engine it'd be different

Won't be selling for at least a month - that's if I do decide to sell it (assuming I can find a buyer at a price I can accept) just testing the waters for which way to go.

For me I'd be saying...

If it's a good runner and doesn't need much to keep it on the road for an MOT, I would keep it on the road for as long as you can.  If you've had all the work done to it and know there's not much else that will need doing it's worth keeping it. As if you know it inside and out.  To get rid of it, you could buy another younger car, but it could end up being a nightmare of a car and it's an unknown car that you're not sure about which can be a risk .

I've broken up two cars, both disheartening as they were both good cars.  Truth is that even as a runner no one wanted them.  Yes breaking them up is fine, but as it's already been said, you could end up with a load of parts that not many people want and you won't get necessary get your money back that you think you will.  And so you're left in limbo!

Is there much work that would need doing to it to keep it as a good runner still ?

Hi mate - no it needs nothing at all. Everything on it is grand. right down to trye pressures!

I have now got a bike which I'll be using for work, the misses has a motor so the mig would be sat up all the time I've always found that I get problems with cars when they are sat up for periods of time.

GooseMan has nailed it, really. No well pampered car is worth as much to anyone else than it is to you, so unless there's a pressing reason to sell it, keep it. For 2nd hand cars to have been abused is the norm these days, so expect some expense getting a replacement up to scratch.

If you do need to shift it on for some reason, you have to weigh up the financial gain (if any) from breaking as opposed to selling, with the time and effort required to break it and the hassle of dealing with dozens of buyers to shift the bits instead of just one to shift the car as a whole. I know where that would land for me, but we're not all in the same circumstances, so only you can answer that.

If you do sell, and need to maximise the price you get, here is not the place, of course. It's full of people who say it's worth more in bits, for a start.

17'' Black MV6 wheels with 5mm+ rubber £250-£300?
Full cream leather with heated fronts working inc door cards £150-£200?
Good engine 2.6 manual £150?
pair of HIDs all working correctly £80?
All doors dent and rust free £20-40 a door?
bumpers - no scratches or chips £50-70 each?
stainless exhaust (mid box bypass and backbox) £180?
all other bits £ ?
Scrap value of shell £ ?

Say £700+ easilly surely?

Obviously the above prices are plucked from the air and depends on what people need and are willing to pay.

Totally get what your saying but should I choose not to use it anymore it'll just sit on the drive and never get used. I i get to the point where I don't need it it'll have to go, one way or the other sadly.

And reality check I know - I'll never get what it owes me but I have a rough figure in mind that would be the lowest I'd want back from it if you catch my drift?

There are certain things that people want and will sell quickly ie 17" alloys, leather interior, colour Sat Nav, 2006 stereo, them there's the bits that if cheap enough people will buy because they are cheap and spares come in handy. Bumpers and  panels are difficult to post so unless someone is close and wants them they will be sat around for months because adding the fuel to the cost of collection will make it more expensive than having their own sprayed.

I've broken loads of Omegas and i've only sold 1 engine and that was a 2.5 diesel.

And as said earlier there will be loads of people asking for parts, so you'll agree a price, remove the part and the buyer will not be heard from again

Cheers for your two posts, Ideally I think £700-900 would be a reasonable price (in my mind) but I can't see me selling it for that having looked about.

So if I invest a little time in breaking it I feel i may have a better chance of getting close to that. I'm sure some 17year old on ebay would buy the rims £200-250 for his astra or something esp with good tyres..?
