It's also a balance of your time / hassle against gain / loss. You, like us all, accept cars lose value (except classics), so any second hand car is not gonna give you a great deal back in comparison to what you paid, especially over a longer period. The money you paid for the car is long gone. You had, I assume, good usage out of it. If it is surplus to requirement, get rid of it, or keep it as a high day and holiday car.
Don't concentrate TOO MUCH on the odd hundred quid here or there lost or gained (I don't mean throw money away, but think carefully about the time you need to spend breaking, advertising each part, possibly issues with buyers etc etc) as will cloud otherwise sound judgement, and not pay real dividends in the end.
