Frankly TB, after reading your opening remark I think the rest of your utterance points more to your shortcomings than that poor lass in York! >:(
I can and do do some 'stupid' things - I use petrol and matches to cure ants nests for example - but:

a) storing petrol in the home
b) pouring it near an open flame

is nothing more than complete stupidity by any stretch of the imagination.

Whilst we pander to these thick idiots, this will become the norm, and I suspect she'll try to get some "where there's blame there's a claim" type chav-tc advertised solicitors to sue somebody over it.

We are all entitled to our opinions. And within the guidelines posted at top of newbie section, all opinions are welcome and equal.

Its well known I have trouble tolerating stupid people, and I feel the gene pool has the Stupidity Gene infecting it like a prolific virus. Stories like this, although I know is sensationalised by our piss-poor UK media, do nothing to dampen my fears.  I refer the honourable gentleman to the text under my avatar...

Its a good job (probably) that we all have differing views. Life would be boring otherwise.

I'm searching 'tinterweb thingy .. but I cannot find any Government advice that says

"Stand in a kitchen beside a lit cooker and pour petrol into a glass jug, then drop the jug on yourself."

A tragic happening  .. but whatever happened to common sense ???

I agree with "TheBoy" to be honest, although not for the same reasons.
It probably is a shame this lady didn't die as the pain and discomfort of her injuries and their treatment will be with her for ever, not forgetting any physical disfigurement due to scarring, the whole process may be too much for her to bear. Good luck and God bless to her and her family...

My Mom suffered 35% burns from the back of her neck down to the tops of her legs when I was a lad and you could say the cause of our fire was stupidity although I'd prefer to blame Valium. Even without this personal experience I think that there are more compassionate ways to get your point across though and it wouldn't hurt to spare some thought to those of us who do not match up to your above average intellect.

Very painful, but I am afraid entirely self inflicted.

Sometimes even clever people do stupid things, which why retrospective analysis is always easy.

What is retarded is blaming someone else for your own stupidity. ie: the government.

If that was aimed at me, remember I'm just the stupid kid from the local comprehensive.  I don't consider myself clever at all.

But even for a thicko like me, we do seen to be breeding a generation of people who aren't just academically/ability to learn challenged, but also no common sense. I think a proportion of teenagers now are too lazy to learn, lack of discipline.

There are enough warnings an notices around about how flammable petrol is. Enough warnings at filling stations about legal requirements to use approved containers. So why use a jug of the stuff near a open flame. Thats not just stupidity, or even carelessness. Not even plain retarded. There are no words to describe the level...

In this case, I lack sympathys.

In fairness, I think a great number of people are unaware that it is the petroleum fumes that are so combustible. Many wrongly believe it is the liquid itself that is flammable and that provided the liquid does not come into contact with a flame, they will therefore be OK.

To be honest, I have a great deal of sympathy for the poor woman.  :(

As the govt told the public to stockpile petrol due to the "shortage", where in this health and safety driven days were the safe handling of highly flammable liquids safety instruction in order to stockpile said materials? Govt scaremongering = overflowing coffers and pity the poor idiot who gets burned because of their greed?......

The govt. never told people to stockpile petrol. Cameron said "top up your car if you get the opportunity". Maude said "maybe keep a bit of petrol in a jerry can".
Left wing media has tried to directly link Maude to this womans circumstances, which is disgraceful.
Imo this woman was extremely stupid. No excuse for that level of of stupidity really, but did she deserve what she got,or deserve to die ? Of course not. Not in the mind of anyone who has common decency and a normal level of basic humanity, rather than someone who seems very desperate to convey an image of being extremely macho and tough, in a primary school playground manner.
Dont expect much else from OOF these days though unfortunately.
