Locking wheel nut key
« on: 31 March 2012, 15:13:57 »

So, I decided to change my front discs and pads today.  When I bought the car last year I checked that I had the locking wheel nut key and, sure enough, in the boot was a plastic box containing a wheel nut key and four standard bolts.  I got the key out and went to apply it to the locking wheel nut and... Well, you can probably guess - it was the wrong key!  When I looked closely, I found that it was a key off a Renault!

Bugger!  I didn't really want to smash the bolts and mess around with them as I'm sure I'd cock it up and make it worse. I did a bit of research on OOF and found that either I had to attack it with a cold chisel and undersized socket, or beg at a tyre fitting place (so undignified), or empty my bank account at a Vauxhall dealer when I could find the time to go to one when they are open and I'm not working (a combination that doesn't occur very often).

However, a little bit of Googling found me http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/REPLACEMENT-LOCKING-WHEEL-NUT-KEY-VAUXHALL-NEXT-DAY-/320868698086?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4ab543c7e6 which looks like a handy little service.  I send them a picture of my wheel nut and they send me a new key.  Sorted. (Hopefully)

£30 :o :o I`d rather chuck a tenner to a friendly tyre fitter, ditch the crap bolts and replace with standard

I know what you mean, but by the time I'd found a friendly tyre fitter and bought four new bolts I don't think the extra £20 is too bad.  ;)

Put the 4 standard bolts back in. I always replace the locking wheel nuts when I get a new Omega ;)

But the 4 standard bolts I've got are from a Renault and they are smaller than the ones on the Omega.  So I would need to buy 4 new bolts.

The previous owner will be in trouble when he tries to change the wheels on his Renault!  :D

Just to update this, the new key arrived on Tuesday (I ordered it on Saturday) and was the right one. So, a useful service if you need it.

I changed the front discs and pads and rear pads today without any further problems (and my brake judder has now gone - yippee!).
