Pulling to the left ...
« on: 02 April 2012, 18:14:14 »

As usual! The car always pulled to the left, but the steering wheel was 'off centre' when driving straight. Had the alignment done today - "yes sir, it was out but sorted now". To be fair, steering wheel now straight, but the car still pulls to the left. So I'm guessing maybe wishbones need looking at?
Could someone please clarify if there are any specific symptoms? I have yet to jack up the wheels and check, but when I do, isn't it 3 / 9 wobble as an indicator? Also need to check for uneven tyre wear which I wasn't aware of.
I've had a quick look at the maintenance guide which may become clearer when actually working with the car, but in all honesty, is this a DIY job? On a scale of 1 to 5, as Haynes would say, how many spanners?

Don't forget the camber of the road usually slopes to the left. If I check my car is tracking staight I straddle the white line and see what happens....

...and also consider tyre wear from the previous set up. Might be worth swapping wheels about and see how It responds, while paying attention to directional rotation.

Also check tyre pressures.

Might be worth posting a pic of your set up sheet with the after settings. :)

Re wishbones... I guess a 3 to 4 spanner rating.

Theory is very simple, it's 3 bolts at the end of the day.

Practice though, it can be a battle. Wishbone must go in level, the shock is in the way, the roll bar makes life awkward and getting the steering knuckle to pop in can be a chslenge. But it is doable.
If not poly, it's also vital tighten the bolts wheels loaded. I prefer to jack the car high enough to place Ramps under the wheels to be sure to enable correct tightening of the bolts.

Then ask Wim, or whoever to re do them prior to set up if necessary.

In fact if the rearward bush is in good nic, poly might be an easier/cheaper option.

Cheers Chris. No printout so now I'm thinking it was strictly alignment rather than 4 wheel geo?
I'll need to get it up and check for play first of all. 67000 miles ish on the car. Didn't realise could use poly bushes without removing wishbones but I guess will depend on condition of the rear bushes. Like Pete said, maybe should get new arms and poly bush them. Would mean the rear bushes would be new too, and might provide greater longevity?

Can do yep. Fitting polly is then easier still.

But then the question is which wishbones to buy. Personally i'll never recomend anything other than Lemforder, esp If you have no access to a press, because cheapo wishbone bushes are a gamble on longevity at best. I'm sure you have seen the various debates on here on that one.

Or you could do as Tunnie did, and simply fit new Lemforder from all German parts. Then fit polly when the new bushes fail, as you may well get the use out of the new bush first. Up to you. :)

Decisions, decisions! It'll probably boil down to finances, and the hope that this is the problem in the first place.
