Hi OOF, 

Been off a while, had exhaust problems   got local garage to diagnose problem, needed new "cat" garage supplied and fitted new "cat",  so thought all fixed,    got another problem caused by garage,they broke a manifold bolt  thats what I mainly want advice on, also had flu    had mot, failed mot on nearside/offside front lower suspension arms    and suprise, 1 advisory,leaking exhaust at manifold    got parts,fitted parts (struggle) got mot    now want to deal with garage that broke my car before they mot'd it,when the new "cat " was fitted    

So heres the low down, car was ok but noisy,generally clanking about noise more than exhaust noisy.  When the garage looked,they said, needs new "cat" and generally tightening up,bracket missing/broken etc. So went with that,used them before and generally ok,never get the price right, but never had any major problems till now. So they fitted new parts,when I picked it up, they did tell me they broke a manifold bolt,but wasnt too bad, only one, lots of omega's running around with broken manifold bolts,all would be ok. But, after only one day it was noisy, couldnt get back to garage but then mot due,so went down that road. suprisingly they then told me, big job fixing the manifold but as it was only blowing slightly it was only an advisory. I had flu and couldnt be arsed to argue, but thought get the mot then argue, hoping I would be feeling better by then. Well as you can see, it failed and its taken me into the second week to get it fixed,not by the mot garage. Well the exhaust is blowing quite bad now, despite the new "cat",but not from the new cat obviously, but from top end   area,cant tell exactly.
Problem may be, only have my word the garage guy said he broke the manifold bolt when they did the exhaust, but not sure if he personally broke it or another guy did and they told him they broke it ?? They know its a bu*&er of a job to do, because they told me that,so obvious they dont want to do it without getting paid for the pleasure. Whats the best way to go here ? any advice helpful im sure

You can only ask but something I have noticed in a few garages round my way is if they snap a stud/bolt etc while doing the job it's just bad luck and they won't be held liable. How that would stand up in a court of law I don't know. What I do know is You will have a big fight on your hands to get them to do anything about it. Everybody knows it's a bad job to do. I'd also be concerned if it's astud to the head. I can't see how you would get in there to drill and tap it out without taking the head off. If it's one of the stud on the manifold to down pipe you may get away with not needing to take the manifold of the car. I'd go back and get them to check it again. see what they say

Wouldn't have thought that would be that bad a job being a 4 pot could have a look as work in Horsham, but not sure when it would be as I work nights  possibly weekend.

Just to add: I can recommend Broadbridge Heath Garage, but have found that most of the other garages won't touch the Omega. Was quoted a grand to change a clutch/flywheel and rear crank seal by one, they even suggested that the cambelt had to be removed 

Another quoted £250 to do the same job, took time off work etc and when I turnedup to drop the car off they claimed that their lift wouldn't take the Omega

Trouble is that they'd done work on a mates transit so I knew it was blox. If they don't want to do a job they should just say so FFS.

Anything exhaust related, snapping studs and bolts is a very real possibility. They just seize in.

Put it this way, if I was working on a members car, I'd make them aware this could happen, and it's thier risk. More than that I'd avoid the job where ever possible for exactly that reason.

Owners risk IMO.


Having said that, Master did a v engine manifold in a field in the lakes(?) with no issues. Although on the other hand, if a stud broke, would I be blaming him? Absolutely not.

Lol, thankfuly the manifold items on the V6 are pretty good (post 97!) 

I do worry about doing the 4 pots and work on the basis that if I have to go near the cat to centre pipe bolts on V6's that I will be drilling and tapping them out!

It would have to be the side I was undoing, not the side TB was doing... As that would have been his fault obviously.

Decent of you too offer Taxi Al  may well wait till sun is shiny everyday and take a look then,got the mot now so road legal for a good while again. Annoying its still noisy,but will have to from and near it for now, strange the mentality of you pay me to do a job and if I break anything its you problem lol wonder how that would hold up in USA ?

Nout strange at all. Why should the mechanic be responsible for, say, 10 years of corrosion?

I suppose we're looking for a queue of replies demanding the garage and staff be strung up? Anyone with experience of these things will say the same. In fact have a search through the forum. You'll find numerous reference to cat bolts snapping and 4 pot manifold studs breaking... And doing so while undoing the bolt.

If it breaks doing up, or is overtightened then there would grounds though.

But moving forward there are ways to repair studs obviously. Drilling and re tapping, etc. Some dealers have specialists come in for such jobs for instance.

Unfortunate, but there we are. Best of luck with it though.

    I had aproblem with a garage that did the injectors on my 2.5 diesel. They totally wrecked the wiring on number 4 and broke the pipe that runs from the servo to egr valve. They charged £350 for the whole job then it cost them £250 for a replacment number 4 injector, £25 for the pipe. Loads of profit!!!  Keith B

put new manifold on my 4 pot easy till the frot two studs broke,got thread doctor £70 drill them out took him 10 mins
