Have you cleaned the registry ?

If not download TweakNow Reg cleaner off one of the freebee sites and let it do the works  :y

If that don't sort it, re instal windows after you have backed all the data up  ;)

try tune up utilities 2012 first, its free for either 2 weeks or 30 days
failing that backup your data and re-install windows, when you set it up put 2 partitions or if you can get a second hard drive for important data and 1 to boot from :y

yep.. simplest and most effective..

but before that route, try to run msconfig   and disable all start up programs and see what happens (..

Quick question: how much disk space is free on the C: drive? Probably need at least 20GB these days. Probably be worth checking all Windows updates are installed too.

Also, go through the processes in task manager and Google each one. Turn off anything you don't use (play safe though).

Also, check your scheduled tasks as Google etc seem to thing their software needs to check for updates every 5 minutes.

No great hardship so far, at this moment in time it reads like you have a driver or service loading that is conflicting with something else.

, i have done the usual de-frag , disc clean up and also a full anti virus system scan ,really don't want to spend any money on it as it's getting on a bit now, any ideas ?
First off, what OS are we talking?

Registry cleaners generally bugger up you PC - you just might not notice initially.  If you have registry corruption, then you have registry corruption, you can't get it back.

If your registry is shagged, then its shagged, and the only viable solution is rebuild.

Windows 98?  :)
I had to install that piece of crap a couple of months ago. Reminded me how bad it really was ;D.  Mind you, it was poor and unreliable when it was released - at least it's predecessor brought in something new.
