running cold

just been on a run,80miles,temp never got above first notch on gauge,heater works ok,had it ticking over on driveway and noticed the fan keeps cutting in every couple of mins or so ,top hose not warm after 5/10 mins ticking over,just had hbv renewed,any ideas?

I don't know anything about the 2.2 diesel engine but it sounds like you have an air lock.  Is there a small diameter coolant hose that goes onto the throttle body?  If so, take it off (not the one that goes to the header tank, the other one) and see if there's anything comes out of it - if nothing comes out, leave it off and "pump" the bottom radiator hose by squeezing it hard until water start to squirt out of the hose you have left disconnected (you should see the level in the header tank go down as air is expelled from the system.

You can often get the same effect just by taking the cap off the header tank and "pumping" the bottom radiator hose as described above.

This is all done WITH THE ENGINE OFF of course!!!

Did it get up to normal temp before the HBV was replaced?

yes as far as i can remember (around town) this is the first good run i've had it on!
