Titanic 100 years
« on: 14 April 2012, 23:44:43 »

At about 11:40pm on 14th April 1912 Titanic hit the iceberg...  :'(

My next door neighbour's family have been on TV several times in the last 3 weeks where his Grandad Robert Hichens was the helmsman at the wheel when it struck the iceberg.  :-[

So this calamitous event would have been happening now.  :(

Tbh, Im sick and tired of hearing about the bloody thing.Cant turn on the TV or the radio at the moment but someone is rattling on about it. Belfast now has a "Titanic quarter" with all the 'dangle berries' you would expect that goes with something like that.
Meanwhile the average Belfast man in the street keeps asking why they keep making a big deal about a ship which was built there and sunk on its maiden voyage. It brings in ££££ from gullible tourists though. ::)

Sympathies with you neighbours. A potentially lovely vessel. More radio needed! When the god awful film came out in 97 i was forced to pretend to enjoy the overpriced video with my then Mrs & got a proper bollocking because i fell asleep. All i remember was a chirpy little kid Caprio shouting "this way, this way when the corridoors were filling up & some silly tart singing "Will go on & on & on & on & on!" Blimey did'nt she go on?

That said i think the real story is way more interesting than the boring movies. I know where the water got into the floatation tanks some of the rivets could'nt be fitted the "new way" due to a lack of access so two tough old navvies with sledge hammers had to stand one each side & hammer against eachother before said rivets lost temperature. Given she was built in Ireland & "delivered" to Southampton without a hitch i love the way the Irish rightfully say....

"She was fine when she left here"!!!!

I've seen the beginning, I've seen the end. I've never seen it hit the iceberg, I always fall asleep.  I never usually fall asleep during films, but that one gets me every time...

Not to mention the £££££'s save by substandard parts which led the the level of damage and the sinking, sub standard rivets and bulkheads that did not go to the roof..... :( :( :(
