Hiya Lads,
 I have a problem with the engine revving up when I am braking .The problem first occured in Dec.2011 after the car was lying up covered in snow for 3 to 4 weeks.I found the plug wells full of water ,I did a job on the scuttle and I think I solved that problem ,the car was driving a lot better after that but has now gone back to its old prob.The car drives well with no problem when its on the Motorway I was wondering if the coilpack was on its way out I would be grateful for any help before replacing the coilpack .I cannot find any breather pipes damaged either.Thank Lads George.

So the engine takes off to 4,000 RPM with the throttle closed under braking?

Only thing I can think of is a failed brake servo causing a massive intake air leak.

Pump the brake pedal a couple of times immediately after stopping the engine and see if you get normal assistance for the first couple of pumps, followed by a hard pedal, then start the engine with the pedal applied and check it sinks a little.

i had that same problem on my old astra with the Z16XEP, and found out that the throttle body was very dirty inside and was sticking whilst braking, so gave it a good clean out, and it was fine after that, but i also think Kevin maybe right on this one.

I was kinda thinking the same thing, vacum leak in the wrong place?  sorry not more helpfull

Hiya Lads,
Did what Kevin said switched engine off pumped to a hard pedal and switched back on pedal dropped a bit.I forgot to mention that after stopping and while taking off again the car moves like the clutch is slipping and then starts to race while not moving any faster this problem is intermittant but very frequent .Any further help would be appreciated I cant understand how it got better for a short time after changing the plugs and cleaning up the coil pack.Thanks for the help Lads George.

kinda thinking you might have missed conecting something or didnt connect something quite right after plug change etc, hell ive done it! its always easier on the other side of the fence but id have a good feel around all the pipes etc esp the rear of the engine and spray some "easy start"  (ether) directly on pipes manifold etc while the engine is running to check for any leaks (if the engine revs up when you spray on a certain part, theres you leak!)
