the diff bearings are shot in my 3.2 mv6 manual ( converted from auto with lsd ) what diff would you guys recommend and would it be worth re building the slipper ?

Rebuilding a diff is a painstaking process which will probably cost a bit and require special tools.

Depends how much you value the LSD, to be honest. By far the cheapest solution would be to replace it with a 2nd hand open diff. For a manual I would say the 3.7 diff would probably give the best gearing, so looking for one from a 3.0 manual.

If you want to retain the LSD, then rebuilding might look more attractive, as they are not that easy to come by.

Didn't 2Woody say recently that rebuilding an LSD would cost "More than a good Omega is worth"? I'm presuming the clutch pack is monstrously expensive.

Assuming the clutches are OK, though, perhaps it could have the bearings changed (and preload/lash/etc reset) for a more reasonable fee.

Yes, presumably the LSD would be usable, although who knows precisely what is making the racket until it's apart? Might be prudent to refresh the LSD while it's open anyway?

Doesn't make the job much easier, though, and I'm guessing a complete set of bearings and seals plus the labour to do the job will cost a penny or two. 2woody would be the guy to speak to, though.

i have a mate at barnsley, he works for a company the rebuilds diffs and gearboxes so could get a rough price for parts and labour and see if there was a possible multiple customers discount unless such as 2woody wanted to do it

there are two real problems......

firstly, the output bearings are GM-only and last time I bought some were £95 each - in 1997 ( and that was for ten ) Most rebuild places tell you that the bearings are "commonly available", but they only change the bearing and not the races, which are the "specific" bits.

secondly, the diff plates are £12 each and there are seven of them. also GM-only.

it is possible to bodge it by retrofitting stuff from a different axle ( i.e. not new ), do you want to lend me the diff for a while and see what I can do ? I'll have a spare to lend you in the meantime.

but for a full rebuild, £300 in bearings, £150 of other parts, then there's shimming, fitting to a vehicle for running in, then measuring the slip factor and adjusting to suit and the labour to go with it all.

you're absolutely sure you have LSD ....?

the car was converted by robseymv6 the explod car was OY53OOG thats where the engine gearbox and diff came from . i have found a 3.0 saloon diff locally for £35 that i will run until i can afford to get my slipper rebuilt thank you for the kind offer 2woody
