I read somewhere in the manuals i got with my car that the aerial shouldn't be covered up, hence its location on dashboard. Thats where Vauxhall always intended it to be. Locating it elsewhere, possibly  behind/under  dash would defeat the object of it receiving clear  signals. So i don't think its been retro-fitted or relocated, seen a few on Elites, all in the same place.Hope this helps.Crusty.

Sat nav disc is years out of date , i never use it . Where should the box normally be fitted  :-\

Tucked under the parcel shelf rings a bell but I could be wrong :-\

I know it wasn't visible on my MFL Saloon ;)

Think ill leave it where it is then , dont fancy ripping the dash out just to hide it ...strange how some are fitted above and some hidden  ::) or maybe its like my ABS thats in auto mode without a button where vx skimped on proper fitment of the upgrade parts .
No worries at least i know what it is now  :)

No idea where the GPS 'aerial' is for my CARiN sat-nav, but it's not stuck on the dash top. The gubbins are in the boot, passenger side, just over the shocker mount.  :y

:) I had the Carin system fitted to the 2.5 I sold and the attenae for it was an unmarked small black squarish box fitted very close to the left side of the dash top almost touching the screen. There was also a small black dome light sensor fitted to the front centre again very near the screen. Looks just the sensor that was fitted to mine so there you go I reckon....... :y

I never really took any notice of it till swmbo pointed it out  :-X Just glancing at it now and then i thought it might be the sensor for the remote keyfob . Sat nav does work although the voice sound does sound a bit steven hawkins ish  :)

Im thinking more that vx had a few problems with the box being hidden so decided to mount the box on the dash for better reception . Cant recall seeing that on my last 2 omegas but they were later models only by a year though .

I think the climate control system uses that sensor, I'm fairly sure it's a sunlight detector...

I can't believe Vx. thought it acceptable to stick that 'carin' antennae on the dash like that and then to route the wire and tuck it into the trim! Seems very shoddy!

My 99 had Carin but no GPS antenna shoddily tucked on the dash ;) My money would be on it being retro fitted at some point

Hmmmmm.... interesting ...the plot thickens!! I still maintain its the sat nav aerial and as such needs to be 'visible' to the satellites, hence its location on dash. Yes its ugly, with the wire dangling and routed under trim, but like modern day Tom Toms and Navmans we locate them on windscreen  for best signal. To retro fit such a system , although not impossible, would require sourcing of the cd rom in boot, the Philips lcd screen next to radio, the aerial and the loudspeaker in passenger footwell, and all the associated wiring.Would this wiring be in car already? According to my manual (TS 1492-A-97) the cars location is constantly calculated by GPS and a gyro sensor (acceleration probe) and the speedo signal.Would these be in place ready for retro fitting? Would someone go to all this hassle when mobile sat navs have been around for many years? Not sure, so i think its how it left the factory....And the small black dome in center of windscreen on dash is indeed the sunshine sensor for climate control.

Is the screen a heat reflective screen (got a purplish tinge from the outside)
Coud be it's there to help with the problem of these screens negative effect on GPs signals

Hi Cliffo, yes i know about these screens, and indeed it would make sense to put receiver in best position to get signals thru this treated screen ,  i think they were on facelift models (2000 on) but my car is 97 mini facelift with normal windscreen. The sat nav receiver is on my dash , just under where most people put their tax disc holders.Hope this helps.

Yep... Several members have ;) There's even a guide for it :y

I still find it hard to believe that in Vauxhall's flagship motor (that was competing with BMW and Merc when launched) the GPS sensor would be chucked on the dash as an afterthought ::)
