Windscreen wiper woes
« on: 25 April 2012, 21:36:44 »

For the past several weeks, the park position of the wiper arms on my daily shed has been getting higher and higher. This morning it was up to about 30 degrees. I'd read this : http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1291058047 : But, the last time I tried to get the wiper arms off I couldn't find my puller. And in any case the LC was in the shed being worked on. So it's a job I've put off and put off.

Got a long trip tomorrow from Zunny Zummerzet to darkest dreary Shropshire. Filled up with Morrisons finest 90 octane on the way home from work, and (obviously unusually for Zunny Zummerset) there was a light sprinkle of rain. Turned the wipers on intermittent, and they parked at 45 degrees afterwards. However, they then stay there, and no amound of wiper stalk waggling will restart them.

Got home and manually forced them back to somewhere close to the correct park position. Then they work, and keep working till you turn them off again. Then then seem to park at a random angle somewhere between 45 and 90 degrees, and won't restart again.  I can force them back down and they work till they next stop.

Given tomorrrows weather forcast is even grimmer than it normally is for the north (i.e. everywhere north of Shepton Mallet) the chances of me getting away withiout working wipers is nill. So, are there any bodges i can do to defeat whatever is going on? Or am I going to have to do the trip in my only other alternative - the old dears 1.0L Corsa Life?

Cheers
Malcolm

Puller not required to strip - remove 13mm nut, then repeatedly, vigoursly, press and release on the hinge section of wiper arm.  Arm will fall off in a couple of seconds.

These are theworst corroded arms I've ever seen. Done it your way on severlal past Omegas, but these babies are well stuck. I don't think they've been off since the day they left the factory. Rather than break anything i abandoned attempts till I find my puller.

However current problem is it's dark and pi55ing down with rain outside. Tools are 2 miles away and i've had half a bottle of a rather cheeky Merlot, followed by some home made Black Forrest Gateau liberaly soaked in real Kirsch. And its a 5:30 am start tomorrow AM.

So I need a quick bodge, or the Corsa it'll have to be.

Looks like you're in the Corsa Malc  ::) ::) ::)

The linkage is exactly the same idea as your LC, so you're going to have to remove the arms to allow the mechanism to be removed from the car so you can get to the arm that's connected directly to the motor. It's a 13mm nut that's come slack so your wipers are now relying on friction to drive them. IIRC someone here said they'd got their hand in to get to the nut without removing anything from the car, but I'd suggest that a bloke the size of you won't have girly hands that'll get in behing the scuttle with it all in place.  :y :y :y

Yeah - suspected as much. Still, gives me the chance to practice "preservation of momentum" driving rather than just relying on the grunt of 3.0 or 3.6 L  :(

So, went to Shropshire and back in the Corsa. Got five miles up the road and on came one of the EML lamps. On getting home, asked the old dear how long it had been on, and got the reply "what lamp - Oh that one - I never take any notice of that." :o

Had a look at the wipers tonight, and Andy was spot on. The nut on the top of the motor spindle had worked loose. Lined everything up and tightened it up and it seems Ok - for now. Difficult to do it really tight because the motor spindle turns. Probably ought to have a Nylock but I don't think there is enough thread on it. So I might try some threadlock. I reckon you could do this job without removing the scuttle tray - once you know what you're looking for.

Couldn't put it all back together, because the nut behind the steering wheel dropped one of the screws that hold the U bend bracket into the engine bay. Can't find it anywhere. And the Tax is up tonight anyway. So I'm going take a day or two, find some ear defenders, and remove the underbonnet incendary device whilst the scuttle tray is off.

Cheers

SWMBO came home years ago in the Senator with the wipers staionary in the middle of the screen, and have also had similar with the Omega, so I've had a little practice over the years.  :y :y :y
ISTR that I did use a nyloc nut  :-\ :-\ :-\, but as you say, a spot of loctite will do the job.
