Knock sensor
« on: 26 April 2012, 19:57:58 »

Hi peeps, I've got a vague understanding of what the knock sensor does. Can anyone be a bit more specific? I know not all cars have them. I'm getting a code 16 on my bros new elite. EML light isn't on, no other codes apart from 31 (when engine off), and it's running fine.

Any ideas? It can just be left for now right?

Thanks peeps

a knock sensor without going into great detail on how it exactly works , pretty much a small crystal that picks up vibrations caused by the engine pinking/pre-detonating and what so on is picked up from the ks then sent to the ecu and then the ecu says "uh oh" so it alters the ignition timing to stop whatever bad is occuring inside your engine :)

handy devices if you ask me  :y

I hope that made sence

OK thanks peeps.

So there is code 16 showing up.

Marks DTM guide says:

4) Under failure conditions, the ECU enters a limp home mode where the timing is retarded to protect the cylinders. This results in the engine running and idling perfectly but, there is a BIG drop in output power.

So code 16 is present, the engine runs and idles perfectly (thanks to my magic today! :y), but there doesn't appear to be any drop in power let alone a big drop, although i have only pootled around town in it.

He also says that knock sensors rarely fail, it doesn't appear that this one has, yet it's showing the code?

Any ideas peeps?

Thanks
