Done 2 or 3 miles on both the Beemer k's as well as the pans. Prefer the pans for speed, handling and general robustness but the police spec ones I used did have a habit of eating alternators. Police pans left the Honda production line as police spec bikes with different switchgear and uprated components whilst the k's, to my knowledge, were aftermarket uprated to police spec.

It certainly held my day to day kit as well as speed gun and other guff easily but unsure for touring but shouldn't think their would be a problem.


Beware, however, the later pan 1300's. They spat a few cops off who sadly died and resulted in the loss of a (very large) market for Honda.  Don't think they have regained that inroad yet, despite the passage of a number of years......

Would also say that this also affected some Beemer k's back in the day but increase in power etc over the years made it more prevalent. I think two gardai (now psni) also died.

Bikes built in 2002 were recalled to have a redesigned engine pan fitted as some bikes had experience oil loss after grounding on road obstacles such as speed bumps.[2]
Bikes built in 2002–2004 were recalled for a wire which chafed against the frame and blew a fuse, preventing the engine from running.[3]
Bikes built in 2002 were recalled for a potentially leaky brake proportioning control valve.[4]
Some units from all years have experienced thermostats sticking open, preventing full warm-up and reducing fuel economy. The OEM part has not been updated by Honda, and some owners have reported good results with a third-party replacement

Think ill be looking at one of the pre 2000 models anyway but looks like iffy stats were the only problem

Pan weave



2002 ST1300P in emergency services configuration. Key differences are single seat plus blue lights & sirens.
Evidence indicates the ST1300 can exhibit a weave instability mode at very high speed — known in the case of the ST1300 as Pan Weave.
In April 2007, subsequent to the death of a police motorcyclist riding a single seat ST1300, the emergency service version of the ST1300, a British coroner announced he would warn all Chief Constables in England and Wales of the "serious threat" to riders' lives posed by the ST1300 and the "catastrophic result" of the high speed weave.[6] Later safety checks resulted in one examiner sustaining several broken bones in a similar incident. UK police forces subsequently withdrew the ST1300 from police service;[7] Freewheelers EVS and London Ambulance Service continue to operate the ST1300

By 2007 the bikes were already well on he way back to Honda. I done my last shift in 2006 and they were already history, police wise. A big dent in the honda empire and the fjr1300 was going through home office approval in double quick time in order to try and fill the Honda hole. My lot went down the Beemer boxer route but I'm glad that I never had to use one in anger. Dont like the boxer style engine a d it's power delivery style.

Im use to inline 4's , had one or two v twins which are harsh . Never tried any bmw so undecided

PSNI (Police service Northern Ireland) was formerly the RUC ( Royal Ulster Contsabulary).

ST1300 problems iirc were sudden violent speed wobble which even highly trained police riders couldnt control. Possibly thought to be confined to police spec bikes - due to equipment used and how it was installed affecting weight distribution ?
At the time Honda continually denied there was anything wrong with the bikes whether civvy or Police spec. No idea what the final outcome was tbh.

Although if I had read the more recent posts above I would have had more of an idea of the outcome.

Thanks for the correction.  My fingers were moving faster than my brain cells...   

The equipement used and installed was by honda themselves at the factory on the production line and included all blue lights, sirens etc but without radio headsets.  The content of panniers was, obviously, down to individual riders but studies at the time (to the best of my recollection) were on loaded, unloaded and badly loaded bikes and all exhibited similar handling characteristics, hence the broohah and the sudden demise of the police spec ST1300P.

I've recently bought my 3rd Pan...j plate with 11000 genuine miles for £400.....stood inder a tree for 12 years!!!
Fresh fuel/plugs and battery...started after 3-4 mins of trying...yes they are bombproof!!
1100's are better than the later 1300 IMHO...plenty of power and will sit on an autoabhn all day without complaint.
Not bad to maintain apart from just about every job starts with removing plastic's!!

MCN ran a article on the Police bikes. A lot were sold as scrap by cutting a little part of the frame out. Most people brought them then welded the frame back up and got them re-registered. It killed the Pan as people were still getting into trouble with them. In some cases bikes with delivery mileage only were sold for 400 quid. It was a marketing disaster for the Police and Honda.

I remember a few years back seeing loads of ex-police ST1100's for sale and at good prices!! I was tempted, but now glad I didn't....

The 1100's were/are still good bikes. It's the 1300's that are the villains of the piece.........

Boxers work well (in my limited experience) just sat in 4th and riding the torque around the lanes, say 40-90mph, rolling off power gives so much engine braking!

Not sure I'd want to use one in a pursuit, they just don't have the power and don't suit the task.
