WIM: Wow - wonderful
« on: 02 May 2012, 21:01:08 »

Was in Chesham today and had the car treated to WIM. Great, fantastic service and all the handling woes have now gone. The drive home was amazing  :y.

The only slight down side was having to have two new front tyres whilst I was there. The front wheel alignment was so far out that the inner edges on both tyres were totally shot - despite 5mm on the outside.  :-[

So, that's one happy me - for now anyway

Does seem to be something they struggle with occassionally. Take it back.

Did they mention rear track rods by any chance?

No, you must never straighten a steering wheel on a steering box equipped car by removal and refitting. Must be done at track rods

Every time I've been there they have taken great care to centralise the steering wheel then put that big weight/clamp thing on it before doing any checks/adjustments.

I'm not sure how it then ends up "off centre" ??

Perhaps it has always been that way and is now "noticeable" because you are aware of it more ??

Dunno .. just thinking out loud ...... :-\ :-\ :-\

So long as the idler arm and pitman arm are parallel (as determined by the length of the centre tie-rod), then the steering box itself is centralised travelwise.
Provided that both outer tie-rods are of equal length, with both tubes having equal amounts of threads in 'em (from each of the inner and outer ball-joints), then, and only then IMO; is it acceptable to reposition the steering wheel on the column.

After my WIM visit, they got everything spot-on - so a tad disappointing in your case.

It always looked and felt as it was straight but one of the reasons I went to wims aswell as having suspension done was that the car did feel like the drivers wheel was toed inwards and the passenger side was pointing straight. When the chaps looked at it their did say the sub frame was out and needed to be moved. Dont get me wrong Iam not complaining just wanted to know if it could be straightend :y

I think because there's so much play in the steering box it can still be quite a way off-centre whilst the wheel is clamped.
