Rubber edging around sunroof is peeling in places
« on: 07 May 2012, 14:22:16 »

Good people

The rubber surrounding the sunroof is starting to peel in certain small spots leaving a light almost whitish colour underneath. Short of replacing the whole trim is there any "old wives tale" type of solution that you know of which can render it passable in the next 24 hours or so ?

When I say "old wives tale" maybe something like rubbing treacle and soot all over it   ;D

Thanks in advance  :y

Mine is heading the same way  :(

Thought of rubbing it down and using hammerite paint after  ???

Not sure if it'll work though :-\

If you're referring to the bit around the glass, about 8mm wide, it's not rubber it's metal and that's corrosion ;)

The only thing that will get it looking good again is to rub it down and re-paint it with some black paint... Smooth Hammerite is generally recommended ;)

Just out of curiousity, is it better to take it all out and do it, or mask the car roof and do it in situ?  :-\

Masking it up would be quicker i would have thought , some have done the sunroof recently with hammerite smooth . Dont know if etching primer has to be used though  :-\

The surround is made out of aluminium which starts to oxidize hence the white powdery residu make sure you use a paint sutable for ally as for removing it to re-paint unless your a glutten for punishment leave it where it is and do a tidy job of masking it up and paint it in situ.

Isn't there a guide somewhere for removing a sunroof? IIRC it's only held in with half a dozen screws  :-\ :-\

I recommend using etch primer on the aluminium surround once all the oxide is removed to ensure good paint adhesion.  I am sure that Vauxhall never did and that is the reason why they rot, especially the later models like mine which was awful when I bought it despite being only 3 years a old at the time.  I used satin black paint to finish and the result was close to the original. I still have a spare that I repaired as a temporary replacement for mine while I repaired the original.
