Royal Mail really are hopelessly inadequate
« on: 11 May 2012, 16:10:53 »

I'll say, first off, the majority of the staff I meet are friendly, polite, and hard working - but the business plan itself is hopelessly inefficient. Firstly, attempting to deliver during the day, when the majority of people are at work and/ or fighting in the dole queue - a terrific waste of their time and fuel.
Even the postwoman I was chatting up talking to said, the ground staff have suggested time and time again to do parcels in the early evening, say 4-8, but the management won't have it.

I'll admit, I work wonky shifts, but when their opening times are much the same as most people's working hours, it causes nothing but frustration - as does early closing on a Friday. Luckily, I've got Woman popping down to pick up my parcel in the morning, but a lot of people, especially people working in retail, will be working Saturday morning, surely?

Then there's waiting for 24 hours before your failed delivery is ready to be collected - even DHL* will have it ready by the same evening, going by previous experience...

If you pay for "First class" post on a Thursday, they attempt delivery on Friday, and you want to arrange redelivery, you have to give them a clear working day in the middle - so you're looking at Monday before they'll redeliver - if you're lucky enough to be flexible around them.

No wonder they're in financial bother every few weeks, when the alternative "private" couriers will provide a much better service a lot of the time...

Ranting is quite therapeutic, even if my grammar and general written English is roughly that of a 12 year old...

1st class "recorded" is not guaranteed "next day". "Special Delivery Next Day" is not even guaranteed

Just two of my experiences today with the Spanish postal system.

I needed to post a letter to the UK and catch the local collection in what is laughingly called our local postal town as it doesn't have a post office. First job buy a stamp from the only place that sells them in town- the tabacos run by a 90 year old woman with a tile loose. As I am going in, the postman is on his way to empty the box. "Will you wait please?" sure, no problem!
I would like 65 cents worth of stamps please, any combination. Sorry only got one euro stamps or two euro stamps. I'll have a euro stamp please? Ran back and caught the post guy who was as good as his word and had waited. He had a look at the stamp and said that is no good. Too much. Tell me about it I said. They will reject it, no they won't take it. Yes they will. Will it get to the UK next week?

I collected my post from our village hut (the one random delivery for the week came today). In the collection of post was my car tax which despite me telling the town hall every year the address is hugely wrong(only the name is correct) they haven't changed the address and this year for the first time ever the postal system amazingly managed to deliver it- admittedly so late that I may get a fine for late payment. Also was a "there is a certified letter for you, please collect any day between the hours of 11.00 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. from the town hall desk" So I have to waste time next week on a special trip in the middle of the working day!

Methinks your UK postal system is marvellous  :y

All state run monopolies are poor. Poor services, poor productivity, poor pricing, it goes with the territory.

The Post Office has never been open to full competition in this country as it would be wiped out.

Next on the list is crony capitalism for poor services, poor productivity, poor pricing, so loved by the socialist Governments Lab/Cons/Dems, you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours (with brown envelopes, like directorships, consultancy work when I retire from politics), which applies to all cartels, Energy, Trains, Water, Banks, Defense Contracts, Big 4 Supermarkets, Telecomms, Television etc etc.

I'll forgive the Royal Mail almost anything (they are really quite good - being serious for a moment) for the more prosaic reason that the woman who delivers my mail is quite a corker.

She loves to have a wee chat after which she walks slowly back down the driveway to the gates (where the post-box is positioned) giving me ample time to appreciate her delightful ass ets on the way. :-* :-* :-*

Needless to say I ensure the gates (always closed) are conveniently opened at delivery time. :y
