temperature guage and radio have stopped working
« on: 15 May 2012, 19:17:30 »

Hi, I recently succesfully got my 03 plate 2.2 cd Omega running again after the timing belt calling it quits and bending all 8 inlet valves  :(  the car was off the road for a while and the battery was getting low so i disconnected the battery till i was ready for starting the car again, which was today ... for some reason though the temperature guage does not now work and neither does my aftermarket radio  :(  i've made sure I've got all the electrical connections in for all the sensors and the engine itself is running fine with the electric fan cutting in and out as needed just fine. anybody got any suggestions ?

temp sensor and radio are on differnt lines only part that connects them is the earth wire under the battery plate,. but other displays would be doing the same.

thanks, I'll check those out when I get the chance, just seems totally random that they were working fine before but not now  :)

Issues could be unrelated, assuming you did some heavy re-build work after cambelt snapping? Double check the temp sensor is connected to the brass clip at the back of the block, it can easily fall off.

had a check, got the radio working by jiggling the fuses  :)  fuse itself was fine ... however temperature guage still not working. I've got one of those plug in diagnostic bluetooth jobs which I can link to my phone using an app called "torque" ... very handy. its giving me amongst other things temperature readings which go up and down as the fan goes on and off. so the sensor itself would seem to be ok. could it still be a sensor problem ?

Have you checked the connector at rear of engine.

The temp reading you're getting via your bluetooth wotsit are fed from the other temp sensor on the coolant bridge ie the that talks to the engine ECU.
As RobG says, check you've a proper connection on the single connector temp sensor, also try earthing the blue wire from the sensor - you should get the gauge go to fully hot.

On the 4-pot it`s right at the back of the engine near the EGR valve. Ignore the "dispack" in the pic your 2.2 won`t have one

after groping around blindly behind the cylinder head I found a spare wire with a spade type connector on it. but couldnt find anywhere to plug it onto ... so I dug out my little angled mirror on its telescopic rod and a torch and I think I've found where its meant to go. there appears to be another screw in sensor immediatly beside the ECU sensor, but theres no spade terminal on it so I'm guessing I've maybe broken it off when I took the cylinder head off  >:(  I'll have a look around and see if I can get a new one

That connects to that. Top of sensor is like a flat disc, spade just slides onto it. Similar to the V6, centre of pic

gotcha, so the wire doesnt go vertically onto the sensor it goes horizontally onto the disc ?

hopefully that'll do the trick, I'll keep you posted

 :)
