Changing followers ?
« on: 18 May 2012, 13:05:21 »

Thinking of changing my followers as one is ticking and Wynns hasn't helped. Can't find a how to but am assuming it is going to invole cam covers off , cam caps off, cambelt off, cams out , 24x collets and springs removed  :o :o which is the bit that scares me !! then pull the followers out and replace with known good ones, then the reverse of the above with new cam gaskets and cambelt?? Do I need a specific valve spring compressor for the mig or will any do?

Not quite. Once the cams are out, the followers just lift out of the head. The followers act directly on top of the valves - you don't need to dismantle valve collets & springs etc

As Andy says  :y
Get yourself a magnet to pull the old ones out with.
Makes it a hell of a lot easier  :y

And keep the bearing caps in order and re-fit exactly as removed as they are line-bored to match the head

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

I also have a "ticking" follower at start up but almost goes away in less than a minute. I have noted that there are quite a few on here with the same and some for quite some time.

It would appear that with regular follower cleaner applied, the usual oil changes and some nice thick wynns will keep the status quo and not need changing.

All that said I think when it comes to cam belt time I will seriously consider doing mine cost and time allowing
