Adjusting the handbrake
« on: 23 May 2012, 15:50:56 »

My handbrake "bites" at a very high point (last click) and I need to adjust it. I have read this guide http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90580.0 but it is far more extensive than what I need and I can't really find how to actually adjust the handbrake cable.
Can someone please explain to me how I adjust the handbrake so it bites at a lower point.

To adjust correctly you will need to follow the instruction, you can't just tighten the cable to adjust the handbrake.

There is a good chance the cable is sized or the linkage in the drum is sized or the shoes are breaking up

What Andy said ^

But as a temporary measure prior to that you could adjust the star adjusters as in the guide, which might take some slack out prior to doing it properly

You do need to have the cable completely slack before you adjust them, though. :y

It's only a temporary measure. Take the handbrake off, push fully down. Adjust star adjusters, hopefully some slack gone. Until the job can be done properly, as per guide.

The problem is, if the slack is due to the cable having stretched rather than shoe wear, the star adjusters won't do anything to help.

You don't know in advance which adjuster you'll need to alter, so, IMHO, it's worth the extra few minutes to get underneath and access the central adjuster too.

Slacken the central cable adjuster, adjust the two star adjusters then set the cable adjuster. No need to worry about stripping down the drums 9although that might well prove necessary if the above doesn't prove satisfactory).

Thank you all for your input. I will take a closer look at the mentioned adjustment points and see how easy (or hard...) they are to reach.
