2.2 engine noise
« on: 28 May 2012, 13:21:13 »

I did an oil change on my 2.2 at the weekend, stuff that came out was black and very thin, thinnest i have ever seen sump oil

However, changed the filter and put the correct new oil back in, and the engine appears to be a bit quieter.

my question is though, it still sounds very 'mechanical' as an engine, not quiet. I have heard a few 2.2's and they were also a bit noisey.

this is mechanical noise, its not a 'worn out' noise either. just engine noise i guess

Is this common ?

are you sure its an engine noise not a tensioner or a belt noise?

Not sure what do you mean as noisey.
My old 2.2 petrol was pretty quiet but then again it had new valves fitted, noisy was only when the waterpump went off (the reason for new valves  >:( )

What sort of mileage is on the lump?

The three quarter engine 4 pot has a hard life, is unrefined, and has to work hard to go anywhere in an Omega sized car. They are quite a noisy lump.

If the oil is fresh, correct grade and level, and all belts/water pump are within correct intervals, just turn the radio up :D :y

(edited to correct spelling of unrefined!)

My 2.2 is rather 'tappety' despite regular servicing, & more frequent oil/filter changes, even more so since renewing the head gasket but the old girl runs just fine without drama (most of the time  ;D). As James says, turn up the radio or let the wife off the leash :D
On second thoughts........ ;D

belts and pumps all ok. engine has only done 76k, so not old mile-age wise

'tappety' is not the right word, but its a metalic noise. non -specific. i just think it sounds as it does.

compared with a bmw 4 pot it seems loud, but maybe its me

its definately better since the oil change.

i actually think it has reasonable power and torque for the Omega, fuel economy is very good

I've had alot of V6's and V8's and this is ideal for tootling around !

Having both, my 2.2 was quite loud when I bought it, but the 4 pots react very well to fresh oil. Around town my 2.2 after years of 3k oil changes from 84k to 155k is now silky smooth. It idles better than my 3.2, it's much much easier to work on too.

Sad fact is, 3.2 is not far off 2.2 in mpg. 3.2 for me is 27mpg mixed driving, close to 30mpg out of current tankfull. Will calculate later this week.

I bought my 2.2 with 89,000 miles on the clock at 3 years old and being ex lease it had suffered the 20.000 mile oil changes.  After an initial flush I have changed the oil every 3,000 miles and now at 108,000 it runs as sweet as a nut but when hot at tickover it does sound a bit rattley and it is using a little oil so the engine is a bit worn but that said my old 1995 2.0 estate was the same at 120.000 miles and that ran perfectly until it was written off.

I think, as others have eluded to think about the water pump, went, gradually on my old 2.2 sounds serious but not an expensive job particularly........ :y :y  We have a V6 now and doing about the same MPG as the 2.2......but more fun...... :y :y :y
