x20xev Rocker Cover Gasket
« on: 01 June 2012, 04:49:21 »

Yoho
So I took the time to to change the gasket yesterday but I notised something with the old O-rings. Some of them was missshaped, there has been some oil damp comming from screw holes but the main problem was some oil in the plugg well and jamed breathers.
As for O-rings that was missshaped they have broken some of the thin plastic sealing around but not the "T" tha hold the rings on place, so the new one goes firmly in place.
Is this bad and do I need a new cover?
Cant put it back on yet due lack of torque wrench with 8 Nm, mine goes from 20- :(

Do you have new "O" rings, and are they, and the new gasket, proper Vauxhall items?
Using official Vauxhall valve cover gaskets and "O" rings is essential, pattern parts do not last.
Also the torque wrench is very important to ensure you do not over tighten the fixings and distort the cover.
But sounds like someone beat you to it on that score.
There is a good guide on here, look in the maintenance section.
You may get lucky and the damaged cover may still seal.
When I have done mine in the past, when it shows signs of leaking again, I have loosened the fixings and re-tightened them to the correct torque. It worked for me.
I stress, only to the torque you have quoted.

Also essential to clean the breathers, again there is a very good guide on here in the maintenance section.
Worth getting right.

With cam cover gaskets use geniune, they will last longer.

Using pattern is a lottery & without a doubt cost you more in the long run.

Dearer in the short term, but as Tunnie says, more than likely to be cheaper in the long run cos you'll only do it once ....... cheaper still if you're paying someone else labour.  ;) ;)

What ever  ::) ::) ............... well documented here that pattern gaskets aren't as good as OE  ;)  and it seems that your mate wasn't paying labour rates by doing the job himself

He was clearly lucky, but 9/10 patterns with fail. We are not doing this by guess work Ralf, countless members here used pattern then reported within weeks/days they fail. They then end up doing them again, which costs more than using genuine parts in the first place.

Thats why we advise genuine, if you cannot afford the little extra for them. Wait until you can.
