my recently acquired 2.2 auto cd. has the original 16 inch alloys...but the tyre sizes are different from front to back???
Fronts are 215/55
back are both 255/55 and 225/55

i am not noticing any issues, should i make changes?

Much tread left? Not too much too worry about, I'd have some fun at round abouts & junctions then make sure you have same fitted all around

It may make your speedo slightly out, but apart from that no serious issues. Given cost of a pair of tyres, I'd just use them up

The standard size on a 16" Omega rim is 225/55-16.

I don't imagine the smaller tyres on the front will make a massive difference but I would want to know why the wrong size was fitted in the first place

The 255/55-16 on the rear is significantly over size. Small differences between the tyres on different axles is generally OK but it is NOT OK to have differing tyres on the same axle.
- One wheel will turn faster than the other so the differential will be constantly working
- The different diameters will want to steer the car round in circles
- The different diameters will make one brake more effective than the other
- The ABS will know that one wheel is turning slower than the others and may activate inappropriately or shut down altogether.

Agreed different sized tyres on same axle is a massive no.  Would get the 255/55 swapped for a 225/55 asap - if you're stopped by an observant Mr Plod you may well get done for different size tyres on same axle!!

Yep i thought that to have different sizes on the same axle is illegal....i was stopped recently by vosa and one of the things they checked were my tyres,and they noticed that i had 240   on the front and 245 on the rear and actually commented on it but it was ok.....so just goes to show they do look...

The difference between the width is 30mm on the Lotus Carlton (235/40 front, 265/40 rears). I am not one for fitting massive tyres (nor skinny ones either) but I can't understand why the previous owner has gone bigger AND smaller.

Go for 225-55-16. That's the size they should be. Some cars have staggered fitment where the rears will be wider. You should never have two different sizes on the same axle though.
