leaking car saga continues
« on: 05 June 2012, 17:12:34 »

People with a good memory will remember me asking months ago what was likely to be causing water ingress to the front footwell of my elderly parents car(Corsa).

It has been to the garage and they "fixed it" and charged. Part of the fix apparently was removing and drying out the fuse box. It isn't fixed. Worse, the lower part of the windscreen became cracked(no chip from a stone etc) and has been replaced today with £75 excess payable by my parents. The fitter wouldn't put it in writing but said  " the screen was cracked by the work the mechanics did and showed my mother how removing parts under the bonnet and then replacing them can crack the screen."

I dare say he is right however I have told my dad he hasn't a leg to stand on regarding the £75 excess without anything in writing and to let it go. However I have told him to go back and demand they have another go, at no expense to him, at fixing the leak as they have charged him and it isn't fixed.

It is really hard trying to advise when you are a 1000 miles away. I might try ringing the garage and asking them if they actually cleaned the scuttle drain or checked the brake master cyl seal though that might be counter productive.

Any thoughts or comments appreciated?

Very frustrating for you V given your location.

The general course of action would be to return the car to the garage, report the continued existence of the fault and ask them to repair it at no further cost.

It depends of course on whether or not your father wants to do this or indeed feels comfortable doing it.

At this stage I would be disinclined to open communication with the garage in the way you suggest as this could to confusion and unnecessarily complicate the matter - it's a sort of a face to face deal in my view unless you are particularly persuasive – elderly parent alone, son living in another country - could you please have another look at it - could it possibly be----?  That sort of approach.

Without independent evidence it would be difficult to do anything about the cost of the screen replacement I would think.

Has anyone checked the door card? I work at a Renault dealer and quite often I end up sealing the door card. Water runs behind and drains through the bottom of the door, behind the sill trim and into the footwell. Ask your dad if there is any evidence (water trails/marks) across or around the sill trim and seal. Worth a look if nothing else.

They live near Scarborough.

Door card. Now that is a possibility. Rain is on the cards if you pardon the pun.

I will get them to check that. Otherwise it is back to the garage and "have you looked at the Master cyl seal, scuttle drains".

Thanks folks
