Steering Idler
« on: 08 June 2012, 13:38:46 »

For sometime since I replaced both front wishbones and track arms have felt a slight vagueness with the steering almost like the steering wheel can be moved slightly without it affecting the direction of travel. Not quite as bad as the old American films where the driver was almost "sawing " at the wheel but doesnt feel quite as it used too with the old bones and track arms.

Have had alignment done properly and it is set up correct so am now thinking that maybe the steering idler is a bit worn and casuing the slight vagueness described.

Is it necessary to have the alignment redone after replacing the idler ? and where would be the best place to buy from ??

Thanks guys

I have done this job once before, but I bought the idler from the bay.

Jack the car up and support it, check for play in the idler arm. Pull it down & side to side, see how much movement is in it.

Most places will do tracking, what you want is a full geometry!

Wasn,t sure if fitting a new idler would adversly effect alignment.

Would always get proper alignment done ..not just tracking  :y

changing idler wont affect alignment. either genuine GM (expensive) or  Lemforder (from allgermanparts iirc). :y

Wouldn't have thought it would affect the alignment.
