oil loss.
« on: 10 June 2012, 15:28:46 »

Ok people... i have posted a thread on here before about the heavy oil usage on my 2.2....
Only had car for around 8 weeks ish and the oil was as black as oil could get and was between min and max on dipstick so not been changed for a long while...
I flushed engine out put in new GM oil and filter and the next day the oil was equally as black again so engine needed another quick change which i intended to do within the next 1k however the CHECK OIL LEVEL indicator came up within 500 miles.. the level on dipstick was at the minimum.... No oil leaks anywhere on engine, no smoke from exhaust on start up or while driving and im still topping up every few hundred miles or so now even after second oil change.... so whats happening ? where is it going?... it had 108k on the clock now...

Sure there is no smoke? On cold start, got someone else to start it and check for blue smoke?

Checked the sump?

Some 4 pots really do suffer with black oil, no matter how many times I changed fatherT's 2.2 oil, always jet black very quick.

My old 2.2, I did after about 50k get it clean!

If there is no smoke it must be going somewhere!  :-\

You sure there is no oil anywhere?
First thing to check
Check the rubber half moons on the back of the engine.
Cannot be checked visualy.
When the engine cools down put your hand in the back and feel the engine under the rubber half moons.
My old 2.2 was leaking pretty badly (more noticeable on uphill driving although this seems a bit stupid).
Almost no leaks when engine was idling but on drive it did need topping up regularly.
Also it needed 3 cam cover gaskets till sorted out  >:(.

try some maxium colour dye, comes in blue/red, put it in with the oil and run engine, used it before, red type when burt gives a pink smoke out of exhaust. if drips on floor leave a mark for a few down poors of rain.

Compression test, sadly.

If its been that abused, wear, esp on No1, might be high.
