Camshaft sensor failing, 2.2 CD, Symptoms?
« on: 13 June 2012, 21:24:44 »

Hi guys, great site and extremely useful/entertaining.

Back in march I swapped my trusty Mondeo si for a 2.2cd Omega auto, 02reg 84000mls, The car is in great all round condition with a maintainence history that has to be seen to be believed (£1000s spent).

I had to do a couple of small jobs (drop links, new cam cover gasket, new lock motor on drivers door) but nothing serious so far!

I have a small issue that crops up every few weeks that causes the engine to turn over longer than usual, 2-3 seconds max before it starts.
Afterwards the emission warning light is lit for a few hours, but then goes out, during this time the car drives as normal.
another thing is on longer runs sometimes the engine warning light comes on(the one with the spanner), but goes off once the car is restarted. again no driveability issues, power loss or limp mode.
I have a OBD2 scanner that I Bought for my mondeo that will read my Omega codes, and it read a pending fault for the camshaft sensor, I think the code was p0340. My question is would a failing sensor cause both warning lights to be lit at different times and the very intermittent starting trouble?
I'm off to vauxhall tomorrow for a new sensor anyway I just wondered if I had another bigger problem lurking, Hope not, the car is fantastic in every other way, and it came with this forum as a bonus!

Thanks in advance
Gaz.. :y

Cheers mate, i'm changing the sensor anyway, was just wondering if the sensor could cause both the warning lights to come on at different times, I'm off to vx later for some open wallet surgery.

This is very likely to be related to camshaft sensor (same thing was on my old 2.2 F/L).
Not sure about emissions, I would say that this points to catalysator problems rather than camshaft sensor.
Also if you haven't done it already clean the breathers and EGR valve

When my camshaft sensor was failing I would randomly get the emissions light on, as well as occassionally have the gearbox drop into limp mode.  Replacing the sensor fixed all of that.
