« on: 19 June 2012, 21:20:09 »

Hi has a rumbling sound from rear when going round a right hand corner, as if the mud flap is hitting the ground but is not that. any ideas what it could be? had a look at wheel bearing and feels fine.
thanks for looking

Any oil in the diff? Old rear tyre gone out of shape or hardened with age? Might even be an engine mount thats shot?

After just putting mine back on the road, I had a rumbling noise at the back, the back box had come out of it's rubber mountings some how, any way re-fitted it and now no noise  :D

ive checked the oil in dif that was ok springs on both sides are fine no broken bits, tyre is fine no splits or hard parts, exhaust box has a few inches away from the frame. shocks work with no sounds. only part not looked at is the rubber mounting on top of the shock, but to day there was no rumbling on drive side rear turn'd into a clunk? checked bearing out with a stethoscope and no adverse sounds from both bearings.

MOT'd SWMBO's Zafira yesterday and the tester asked if I had heard rumbling at the rear..... not that I remember.

He tells me that Vx generally suffer from rear tyres going out of shape, which was the case this time, but he warned that if you hear the rumbling and go to a garage, chances are they will tell you its the bearings!

Advice given: Change the rear wheels to the front, if the noise moves forward it's the tyres and if not then it's possibly bearings ::)

I dont know if its the same problem but I was getting a clunk/knocking sound from the back of my car and after a lot of investigation and changing bits I changed the top rubber mounts on my rear shocks and the noise has gone. I belive it was the rubber +metal collar that goes thru the car. Hope this helps.
