Hey chaps,

Just having a look around my car and observed that my (clean at the time of fitting) alloys have been on for 7-8000 kms now. There is very very little brake dust showing. On other cars I notice the black traces very quickly and after a few thousand km start turning quite black.

The reason? Could aireated discs have an effect? Maybe the product I cleaned them with keeps the dust at bay for longer?
Just pondering really. Your thoughts? Or knowledge, even.

I know what you mean. i get the black dust. i think the CD alloys i have are at the perfect angle to store this crud too 

one thing id like to know is... i've been working on brakes (discs n pads) a few times.... i never wear any face protection. if i breathe this shit in is it going to harm me? it mentions in the haynes manual to ''consider all brake components have aspestos and mask mouth just in case

Not sure this is allowed any longer. Masks are a good idea, IMO, although I generally forget to wear one.

The point about the shape of the wheel might have a bearing on the rate of collection of dust. Maybe.

if paint protector polish is used on wheels they will get less dirty..

Probably depends on the brake pads too. Recent trade club (in the kit with the disks) pads seem pretty bad for dust.

There have been lots of complaints that tradeclub pads are very dusty...
Another reason why some prefer the OE pads, better braking feel and less dust

It's one of the reasons why they're dirtier, don't work as well, or last as long and ruin the discs so quickly.

A lot of modern formulations are like that as you can't be trusted with some of the constituents. So you end up with things like masking tape(really dangerous stuff wouldn't you agree), that barely sticks to the surface, and is released as soon as paint hits it. Or grinding paste that has virtually no effect.

As stated above. Have polished the alloys on all my cars for years and they last about 5 times longer than if i don't polish them.

you can uy a spray on product now....armoral make i think...not sure if it works??..

It will be the quality of the pads used. Which seems almost directly related to their cost. IME.

I discovered that brake pads that are used for 30k kms make less dust

Oe might give you a few more miles cem.

Dust on the wheels being precisely related to the amount of wear on the pads. Oe pads giving vastly less dust.
