Speed bumps???
« on: 26 June 2012, 16:50:03 »

Is it just me or are speed bumps a daft idea. F##king hate the things and women never seem to slow down for them! Was in with the missus today, coming thru the town and bang, speed bump at 40 mph, wtf. I thought they were meant to slow people down!! Then she wonders why her suspension is making noises  ::) ???

Only a daft idea if you choose to fly over them at 40 mph, I guess. Then again, maybe it's not the idea that is daft  ;)

When i went Kwiktrip a few yrs back they said business was booming for wheel alignment since the speed humps had been in place and recommended to have tracking done twice a year  ::)

Our town high street is riddled with them and for some strange reason pedestrians think they have the right to use them to cross the road, even though we have a zebra crossing and pelican crossing within easy reach.  ::)  Somebody will get killed one day.

I have noticed that here as well , because you naturally slow down for the humps they think your slowing to let them cross . Mind you when the police are chasing cars they fly over them 50-60 mph  :o must keep the garage busy replacing ball joins an stuff .

i totally get the idea of speed bumps. theres some real steep ones near me and they do their job cos they just cant be taken fast and span across the whole road..... like the ones up near TB if any of you have ever been there?!

however the ones i dont get are the ones where there are two ''lumps'' in the road and if you go directly over them dont even cause a bump? lol wtf

No , they just smash your sump in and slow you down that way, effective i supose although it does make another hazard for bikers.

The ones we have here are the ones you straddle that go under the car missing the sump "just" most of them have all broken up on the edges chewing the tyres on the inside edges as you drive over them  ::)

Since getting the Omega I don't mind speed bumps much, then again the Vectra I drove before was so slammed you couldn't get your foot under the sills, I just learned ways to negotiate the things, didn't want to raise the coilovers I liked the way it looked  ::)

One good decision by the London Borough of Barnet is to not replace the bumps when roads are resurfaced. Slowly, but surely, they are disappearing round here.  :y

When the bump covers 90% of the width of the lane, why do drivers steer to the side so (here) the left two wheels go over the bump, whilst the right two don't. Surely this puts uneven wear on components, and is more uncomfortable for the occupants of the car then if the whole car went over the bump. Why do people do that?

I had a Pug 206 Turbo like that, looked nice but quite impractical to use as a daily drive.

I find the most effective way of crossing them at maximum speed and comfort, is to brake hard as you approach and release brakes just as you hit the ramp as the front suspension unloads from the braking it is taken up by the ramp.  :y :)

Luck for you :y in Nottingham the bloody things are breeding and getting higher. ;D ;D The council now have a habit of narrowing the roads so only one car can pass at a time and then put concrete bumps on the rest of the road. BLOODY JOBS WORTHS >:( >:( >:( Love to waste Council Tax payers money. There is always a rush to add as many speed bumps, road narrowing, cycle tracks and lamppost replacement in March and April to use up any budget they have left. They don't repair the roads anymore just patch up the pot holes (badly) which need doing again a couple of months later. >:( >:( >:(

I try and avoid speed humps wherever possible even if it means a longer journey. They damage suspension, exhausts, cooling systems ETC,
I just go slowly over them if I can braking just before and releasing the brake to pass over them, similiar to Rods2. It's the ones that you hit a night that get me. >:( >:(
