Engine stopped
« on: 28 June 2012, 10:29:13 »

My car is booked in for a service in 10 days or so, mainly because I'm going on holiday at the end of the month.

In the past week, it's failed to start twice, and this morning, the engine stopped while I was waiting at some traffic lights.  On the two occasions it wouldn't start, the engine was reasonably warm - it had been standing for between 1 and 2 hours since I parked it.  The first time, I called the AA, then I tried to start it again after 30 minutes without success.  The repairman arived 15 minutes after that, and it started immediately.  The second time, I just waited for 30 minutes and it started.

This morning, with the engine up to temperature, it just stopped, and I couldn't restart it.  With some help, I pushed it onto a nearby garage forecourt, where it started after 1 minute at my first try.  It ran OK all the way home.

The only thing I know that's wrong with the car is the temperature gauge, which I wrote about here:

Any suggestions?

Hmmm, can you read the fault codes.

Did it stop only when idling?

Would it start with slight throttle or no start at all (for the periods stated)?

Favourite is crank sensor but the above questions look to rule out a sticking idle valve  :y

Description matches the failure of my crank shaft sensor almost exactly ... and the one I changed for someone else in sainsbury's car park a few years back !!! .. :)

No, I can't read the fault codes, but I know the instructions are on here somewhere.

It was idling when it stopped - I've often thought the idling speed was a bit low, but it hasn't done this before, or at least, not recently.

Wouldn't start at all, but then started about 5 minutes after it stopped.

Not sure what the idling valve is, but for a long time now it has had an idling problem.  Every 30 seconds or so the engine seems to surge, and will actually move the car forward if the handbrake isn't on very firmly.  Recently, I've begun to suspect that it's not actually an increase in revs that causes the problem, but that a drop in revs occurs first and the surge is just a catch-up.  Naturally, the last few times it's been in the garage, I've asked them to look at this, but they never fix it.

When you have tried to re-start it, did you apply a small amount of throttle input?

(if yes and it still did not start then crank sensor is the favourite)

I tried no throttle, small amount of throttle and flat on the floor.  Thereafter, I assumed that I'd flooded something (engine?) and I'd have to wait until it felt a bit better.

I used to know how to sort out a carb... :(

Thanks - I'd just found it.  It's just about within my technical competence, but definitely pushing the limits!

Don't have time to do it now - I'll have a go this evening if it isn't raining.

Can't actually work out how to print the post - there's no chance of my remembering the instructions :(

No different.

On fuel injection systems cranking+full throttle=no injection ...... :y

I have had two failed crank sensors (on two different cars over 110,000 miles).

Symptoms match perfectly.

First car was a 2.5 pre-facelift and there were no codes.

Current car is a 2.6 facelift. Don't know if the AA man found any codes :-\ it started as soon as the AA arrived ::) so after chatting with AA man for half an hour I drove it home and fitted a new sensor (and it hasn't played up since........)

I keep a (genuine) spare in the boot now.
