If you suspect your HBV is gone, how do you test it?
« on: 28 June 2012, 18:28:15 »

Hi guys,

As above really. I had what I thought was an oil leak but after examining the puddle it actually is water  ::)

My mam called me today and noticed it was dripping quite fast from underneath.

I didn't have much time tonight but thought I'd try and get a goosey behind the plenum to see if I could see the coolant spurting out (as I've witnessed this before when Daz last replaced my HBV) but no such luck. And even less luck when I looked underneath to find no leak at all  ::)

So! How do I properly test this to see if the HBV is fubar'd? :) I'm thinking it has something to do with playing with the heater settings but don't know what ones to do. please help :)

Check the water on the floor is not natural water seepage from the air con drains, which is normal, and tastes like water.

If it tastes the same as what's in the coolent bottle, then it's coolent leaking from the system, and you need to look further into it.

Testing the hbv, involves locating it so you can get your hand in there and feel if it, or the surrounding pipes, are wet. Try with cc on minimum. Then on Maximum temp.

Beware though, the coolent will be hot, and will warm up quick.

HBV has two states - open and closed.

it's open, allowing coolant into the heater in ALL circumstances other than when the air-con is ON and BOTH temperature selectors are at MIN.

Sorry to high jack the thread.
Have the same, only when CC set on high, though, crystal clear and is bitter-bitter, are these the symptoms you mean.   Have been looking for a leak for days :'( :'(
