further to my "MOT again" thread in general car chat -
car has failed on "missing wheel bolt" on rear o/s
Trouble is, the hole in the hub(?) has stripped so I can't just replace the bolt.

I don't even know what the part is called - is it the hub?
How difficult to replace? - is it as much work as changing the wheel bearing?

Would I be better filling the hole with weld, then drilling and re-tapping? what size thread?
Are helicoils still available?

Or should I just blu-tack the bolt in for the MOT?

you used to be able to use a crimp in old days when there used to be just 4 holes for holding the wheel on but dont know if they are legal any more? was a bit like a helicoild did the same job.

To change the rear hub & half shaft you need to
- unbolt the 6? bolts holding the drive shaft to the drive flange
- undo the big nut holding the drive flange on
- take off the wheel, brake caliper & brake disk
- pull off the drive flange
- pull the rear hub & half shaft out of the wheel bearing.

- press in a good used hub & half shaft and put it all back together again

so easier than changing a bearing then?

I think I'll make it easier still, and take the wheel of first, instead of third.

You have to take the the half shaft out to get to the wheel bearing. If you are up for a challenge you could do the wheel bearing as well

To undo the big nut on the back of the drive flange you need to stop the shaft from turning. Leaving the wheel on is the easiest way to stop it turning.

On a positive note....... if it was taken apart 6 months ago it should come apart relatively easily now (assuming no bodgery happened last time  )

What caused the original thread to strip? My money is on a gorilla with a windy gun reaming all of the wheel bolts up to some unknown torque. If this one has gone the other 4 may be damaged also

The MOT doesn't require removal of the wheels so a helicoil would gain a pass certificate but I would certainly have a good look at the condition of all the wheel hubs (and would sleep easier if this one was swapped)

do i feel lucky?...no i have dismantled several rear wheel brg's and i only got lucky once,every other time the wheel brg was destroyed on removing the stub axle.still its your call.
