SORN £80 fine
« on: 11 April 2008, 23:54:10 »

Last year i scrapped my old MkII Astra GTE 16v (loved that car :'() and still got the red-top sat in the corner of my gragae looking lonely.

Anyway back to the point at hand, I had a letter from DVLA today telling me that my astra has no tax and has not been SORN so please could i send them £80 as a fine >:(

Now i'm positive that I took the V5 with me and the scrappy stamped it and sent it off, or should i have sent something off? I'm opps'd if i'm going to give these robbing gits 80 beer tokens for nothing >:(

Sounds like the scrappy didn't do the paperwork. >:(

Have you got any proof that it was scrapped?

Yes. Just like selling a car you should keep the main bit of the log book, and they send off a slip, IIRC.

Just drop them a note saying that it had been scrapped, and which yard had it and when, and you should be ok. Say that you did send the log book off to them saying it had been scrapped.
It should be ok. It sounds like a computer generated letter.

When you scrap your car they either stamp or fill in the yellow slip on the top right of the log book which notes sale/scrap to the motor trade iirc they then keep the blue part and its YOUR responability to send off the yellow part, have you not got a recipet or letter from the place you scrapped it because the place i use send you a letter in post saying that vehicle such and such has been scrapped, hope this helps

It is always the responsibility of the seller to notify change of keeper. On the V5 document there is a yellow tear off section which you should have completed and sent to Swansea, it is to Notify sale to the Motor trade/ insurer/vehicle dismantler. You cannot say the car was scrapped unless you saw it crushed or broke it up yourself. With the sheer volume of mail going in/out of DVLA some does go missing. If you definitely posted something to notify change of keeper you can argue that it must have been lost in the post, how much luck you will have is hard to tell. When DVLA receive a change of keeper they acknowledge it with a thank you letter, if you have that letter they must have received your notification. If the car is still in your name, chances are that they have not received it. You can SORN on-line, at a post office, by mail etc. If you haven't done any of the above you will be £80 out of pocket shortly.
