V6 head gasket failure
« on: 05 July 2012, 20:48:11 »

Hi.
My V6 badly over heated on the motorway on Saturday. I had called in for some fuel. I also topped the coolant up and forgot to replace the cap on the expansion tank. Any way to cut a long story short - engine overheated blowing out masses of water, Once it had cooled a bit i refilled the expansion tank and it seemed to go straight into the sump. Engine would not start. The AA man diagnosed blown gaskets and carried us home. I have taken the engine apart and sure enough the gaskets are beyond redemptioin. Will also check the oil cooler whilst its in bits. I have 2 questions. 1. How can i clean the bores after all the water is out, and 2. what is the maximum "warpage" i can get away with. I can get a 6thou feeler between the bridge between two of the bores.

Officially* the heads cannot be skimmed at all. I would say that 6 thou means that your heads are scrap. :(

Save yourself time and trouble & get a pair of good second hand heads from one of the members who break cars.  :y

* I had the heads skimmed (successfully) on my 2.5 v6 but I wasn't aware of any warping, I just had the surface skimmed to remove pitting/corrosion.

What are you trying to clean out of the bores? I would use lots of kitchen towel to mop up the water & then apply engine oil to stop it rusting.

Thanks Andy.
I have cleaned the bores and will oil them. Ref the warpage. Its strange -the heads seem to be perfectly flat apart from that bit between the 2 bores, all the other surfaces seem to be ok and feeler tight.

Thanks.
Is it worth me rebuilding the engine or will it finish up in the same state? What options have you got in mind?

tbh, really depends on the condition of the rest of the car. if its a good un then why not. how deep are your pockets?.
your call really. a pair of heads are not a problem, oil cooler about 100 odd notes, all comes down to if its worth it to you i suppose.
