Hi Guys,
A friend of mine has an Omega CD DTI estate 2002 2170 cc's (Manual)

The fault is the usual, driving all ok- eml light comes on and goes into limp home, switch off and leave for a second or 2 and all is ok and off you go, doesn't seem to have any real pattern  to it from what I can gather from herself.

She came to me last week and asked if I would have a Wee Look, so took a wee look (I've a Snap on Solus which can only read the basics and codes) the code retrieved was P0400 Critical System failure, looked on this forum and then cleaned the EGR Valve (didn't actually look that badly carboned), cleared the code and suggested she try it, she's just emailed to say it's the same, so advice please, will it require the removal of the plenum and a full/thorough clean of the egr system, if so how long will it take and what parts- gaskets will I need, I've not worked on this system before so any assistance would be most gratefully received (I've done a wee search and found a couple of posts).

I've removed and cleaned the EGR valve and the let manifold and swirl flaps but mines still playing up. The only thing i've replaced that's made a difference is the MAF sensor. I've replaced the crap Chinese made one with a new genuine one and the car runs better but its still not right.

Check the vacuum pipes and actuators. Especially the one that controls the turbo wastegate. I kept getting EGR codes on my old Vectra with the same engine and it turned out to be a vaccum actuator. Let the car run for a few minutes so it's had a little drive and then whilst it's running, run your hands over the vacuum actuators. One of them may be blisteringly hot. Follow the little thin pipes back. If it's very, very hot, it's faulty.

Does the Omega have a boost sensor mounted on the inlet manifold, similar to the Vectra C?  I believe this is common fault with the Vectra's as it gets coked up in the same way as the EGR valve, and is the next port of call if cleaning the EGR doesn't solve the problem.

I've had this same prob since i bought the car.
Changed the Turbocharger Boost Pressure Solenoid located inder the fuel filter and it seem's to have sorted it!!
Used these guy's for the part and it was a genuine one they sent.

The code i was getting was p1590 which didn't show up on a solus reader but was there on a techII.

Many thanks to all for the reply's so far, I'll be in touch with my friend soon and arrange for her to come to my house for a look under the bonnet and check out the Maf sensor, boost sensor (if fitted) and the vacuum pipes and elbows and see where that gets me, I will of course post with feedback on all of the above to possibly help others, does anyone have the test procedure & correct readings for the Maf sensor and boost sensor to hand.

Boost sensor (Map sensor) is located under the black plastic engine cover at the right rear as you look in the engine bay from the front.
1 allen key bolt and a 2 wire plug to remove.
!0 mins top's to get to it.
