Cuts out and misfires on starting
« on: 12 July 2012, 15:38:24 »

Omega CD 2.2 2001. Problem on starting when not been used for a few hours. Starts OK, revs to 1200, cuts out. Repeat 3 or 4 times till running. Revs drop from 800 and 400 and repeats, misfires, runs really rough. Leave running for few minutes - can gently accelerate ok. Try to accelerate harder e.g. going on mway - no response or lurches. Can get to 50 and cruises ok - have to floor it to get above that. Coolant Level, Oil Level and Brake Light warnings on but all manually checked and ok. Garage fault code decoder showing 7 faults, 3 refer to manufacturer and others include lamda and air flow sensors. I was thinking EGR valve, garage think ECU. Any views anyone please?

Exhaust manifold cracked - apparently common problem with 2.2. Any idea of cost for a new one please?

Are you thinking that this cracked exhaust manifold is the cause of your startup problems?

I think you'll be very disappointed after you've replaced it, if that is the case.

I'm certainly no expert here so all advice more than welcome - got 2 problems really - 1 startup and 2 lack of power and lurching on acceleration. Been told replacing the cracked manifold wold resolve 2 - what you reckon on this Abiton? Also on 1 do you reckon MAF sensor as per other comments? Ta.

RobG - had car in garage to get ODB decode - asked them to do it and they said no difference. Just went out and done it myself now - disconnected the electrical connection - didn't start much better but engine running fine now - took it for quick spin and put the boot down and full power. Looks like they've been trying to shaft me >:(.

Always worth listening to our Rob.  :)

You may want to replace the manifold at some point, but unless it's a fairly gaping crack, I'd expect the noise to be more of an issue than any effect caused by gas leakage in/out of the crack.
If it's not making any significant noise, no urgency I'd say.

Be aware that the studs which hold the manifold to the head have a tendency to snap, probably due to the manifold warping and putting them under unanticipated levels of stress. So treat with caution and lashings of PlusGas, as and when you do decide to get in there.

Thanks Abiton - seen the studs issue on other threads also so point noted - will do MAF sensor for now and look at manifold when more flush!
