V6 or Diesel?
« on: 14 July 2012, 23:28:00 »

I have a 2.5 V6 Estate, and it is getting a bit tired!

So I am looking for an '03 to replace it.

If I go for a diesel, what are the shortfalls likely to be? Will it tow the same weight? What will the fuel consumption be?

Will it cost more than a V6? Has anyone got an '03 to sell??

Thanks

Colin

Biggest downside is that an 03 diesel will be a 4 pot and manual ::)

Got a 03 dti and it pulls big ifor williams trailer better than 2.5v6 i had  ;D
Don't expect much over 40 mpg on a run and less around town, injection pump ecu does seem weakest part mine started playing up 10000 miles ago.
Its done 110k now and doesn't use any oil and loads of space under bonnet  ;D

Even though i moan about it averages mpg a v6 can only dream of  :y

A diesel will pull pretty much pull what you put behind it (about the same torque figure as a V6).
They'll do around twice to the gallon as a V6, I'm currently getting 46mpg combined urban, though he's been remapped, decated & has had the first muffler removed, this equals more power, better fuel economy & you don't lose power higher into the revs like I was before.

Agreed... I miss my V8 :( :D

As suggested... Price wise, an LPG converted V6 will return similar economy (price wise) but you still get the fun of petrol :y

Agreed. Best of both worlds. :y

No point in a diesel Omega when you can LPG a petrol one IMHO. The older generation of diesels in an Omega won't give you significantly better economy and performance is way down on a V6.

I have to admit that I've purchased a V6 3.2 estate & that too will have an LPG kit fitted soon.
The diesel will fund the project.
Having driven both cars, the diesel will pull away from the V6 at lower rpm, but in the end the V6 will win obviously.
I would say that a V6 manual would be the way to go for a good all rounder.

The desmond diesel produces almost the same amount of torque as 3.0 V6 ::)

Personally I would have the 2.5 diesel with a manual box but they didn't make them much after year 2000 unless you fancy a left hand drive ::)

Just had a look on Wikepedia. That says the Y25DTI engine was fitted '01 - '03. And it was a straight 6?

Is that not true?

Yes it's true, but not in right had drive.  Plenty to be found in Opel guise, but it never made it to the UK.  :'(
