tie rods best to get new ones as can damage them taking them off, and bushes they should be new aswell. shocks/springs may look good but will they last is another thing. steering idler should use new one aswell as can be damaged taking them off.

Not sure I'd be fitting unknown 2nd hand parts :o

Had a friend that swore this was a sensible way to go, often the car would be significantly worse and he just wouldn't accept that you couldn't go on visual condition alone for certain parts such as suspension bits.

Plus, new suspension components (even if you are on a budget) will feel so much better!

Indeed. For items like shock absorbers, from a 12 year old car, I'd say that it's 100% certain they'll be tired, and probably 50/50 whether they'll be serviceable at all. These items don't tend to get replaced until they fail completely, yet after 100k they'll be tired. No way to know until you go to the effort of removing them from the donor and fitting them to your car.

Ball joints, track rods, etc..  OK, you can check these easier before removal, but they are cheap to buy new and have a relatively short life, so how long will a "good" set from a scrap car really last you? Plus, they aren't always easy to remove without damaging them, or at least stressing them, which will hasten their demise.

I have broken up a few cars now, and I have always made a point of not even taking these components off the cars.  I would be happy to give this parts to someone if they were really desperate, but I would certainly never want to sell them to anyone as it's impossible to know if they will be any good.

As previously said, with some things there is no alternative than to buy new.  :y

NOT SURE i WOULD AGREE,
I found an omega 2.5td here in spain which had just 69 thousand kilometers on it in the scrapyard, as my front struts were tired i bought them immediately, now they were on a year 99 car but had never been used, my car drove much better after fitting them,
if i could have got the engine for a good price i would have bought it to!!!
yes age comes into it but mileage makes the difference i think, plus out here virtually nothing rusts, all bolts clamps etc came undone like new,
