self employment what a joke.
« on: 23 July 2012, 20:09:13 »

Self employment in my industry seems to have hit rock bottom :'( but tommorow going for a trail as a commercial catering engineer something I do not know a great deal about ;D but there seems to be a major shortage in this field, this is a Paye position. Even better well in London at least it seems the more people are eating out these days, which doesnt make sense as there is a recession on is nt there ??? but Me thinks if I get job will race up to Harpenden and grab that Silver mig on the bay of Fleas because after all there is a recession ;D..SH....S dont tell the wife..

Self employment is I think a joke in any field.Be your own boss they say, work what hours you fancy, enjoy much time off they say. What a load of toffee! What they don't say is if you don't work you don't get paid,I'm talking here of bank holidays and the generally accepted 2 weeks hols. on the costa where ever that most take for granted as getting paid for.Well you can forget that for a start.8 bank holidays a year plus other hols have to be earned by grafting silly hours a week to make up for the "lost" time.I've been self employed for many years now and still don't get "proper"hols,as I'm busy thinking of meeting deadlines on contracts so I don't lose them or where I might gain fresh work if I lose present work. Then there's paperwork, accountants etc.to be dealt with, the list goes on!Why do I do it then?Simply I Know no other way and at my age I would find it very difficult to get "proper"paid employment!

Been self empolyed from the age of 19 and now 51 when I look back over the years It has been good

I have learnt a lot and everything I no has been on my own judgement which was fun

The down side to it is It can work for you or It can work against you

You have to put an extra big effort into it all

Start with crap money then work your way up the ladder

You dont state what line of work you are in?

been self employed for blimey must be 20 or so years i various roles in shopfitting foreman fixer agent contracts manager etc even started my own company for a while blah blah been trying for 4 years (wrong time really) to get back on a salary etc only becuase just wanted a steady wage and more time off with wifey

as soon as you say self employed or youve run your own company the doors shut or youve got too much experience for the role :o :o wtf

once again i find myself going into the realms of starting a company something that just has happened been very lucky lately with work so much so i have had to take on 3 people short term at the moment

I think in most trades or even professional roles, any real incentive to be self employed has slowly been taken away

and as for the state of the construction industry as a whole it makes my blood boil and my heart sink i get so angry so bloody angry i say i could throw the phone down and then have a cry its just an emotional rollercoaster :'( :'( :D
