detaching a detachable tow bar
« on: 27 July 2012, 16:06:03 »

My elite came with a factory fitted detachable tow bar but no key.  The lock looks a little distressed anyway it may have been disabled.  The owners manual instructions don't help me remove it though.  Has anyone had this issue before, is there a way to detach it or should I try for a replacement key from Vauxhall?  Are there any tricks to removing it even if I had the key - nothing seems to move but I  haven't tried the club hammer yet. Thanks.

I've got a factory fit detachable on my elite that i took off my mv6. I'm not particularly slick in fitting and removing as once it's on or off it stays on or off for a long time.

If it's the same as mine have you tried making sure the pin is pushed in? The one with the green band on. When the green band is showing that means it's properly fitted. Hence push it in and it should be ready to remove. At the same time as pushing it in, turn the big twisty handle that the key goes into (assuming as you say the lock is disabled) and it should come off. I think the lock is only for security reasons so people can't nick it, although not sure so i always have it locked when on car and not hooked up. Although for piece of mind if you get it working you might want to double check that, especially as you don't have the key.

Hope all that makes sense

It's not a good idea to leave detachable towbars in situ for too long.  :y

The Bosal on my 'new' Merc isn't as easy to remove as the Westfalia is on the Omega despite liberal lub'ing.  :-\

Mine was bought thro my local VX dealer when I got my 1st miggy (a MV6)
It was recommended by them for the lowered sport suspension
The bar is built like a tank with a 65ml dia bar running across the rear of miggy
The hitch is off or on in seconds
Just a matter of sliding back a locking click off catch
Importantly I think it's designed and made by Alco Kober the caravan chassis maker
It cost a fortune in those days just over 400quid
But I now realise it was worth every penny

Pikeys?!  It's an Elite, not a CD (and its detachable, not fixed) ;)
