EXhaust back box
« on: 02 August 2012, 16:34:23 »

Hi I have a omega 3.0 Elite. I have just been to the yearly MOT and it has failed because the back box for the exhaust is blocked with something but the garage have not told me with what. The emission probe cannot go into the back box to do the emission test. Anyone know what the stuff is and where it has come from please. Thank you

Its probably the sound deadening from the back box itself.

you can pull it all out, but it means the baffles have collapsed inside the box. Time for a new back box  :y

Try an old metal coat hanger straightened out and a hook bent on the end. The stuff inside should look like hair, once removed the car might sound loader though

It depends on the make of the system, some have the thickness of Bacofoil ::)

Either you had a very cheap and nasty exhaust put on, I mean cheap too, £80 cat back systems easily last 4 years +

Or, its possible you were charged for an exhaust change, but they did not really do it  :(

Where did you get it? What make? Is there a warranty?

Silencing material varies from wirewool to horse hair type stuff(what ever it is) and could come from any of the 3 silencer boxes and be blown back to collect in the rearmost silencer.

Or the baffles have collapsed.

If it was me, I'd get a torch and have a look. With some imagination ready to hook out or smash the silencer out the way. If needed...?

If its just the rear silencer that failed it won't be massively loud. Quite a nice noise IMO. ;)

On my old genuine mid sections we cut one of the silencers open, just to see. All the wire wool had been blown out the rear. I guess it's just luck if it catches and jams or gets blown out unnoticed.

I noticed something hanging out the tail pipe on my car several weeks ago.
I must have pulled out about an asda trolley load of curly wool.
She still  passed the MOT last Wednesday :y

a mate of mine swear by taking the back box off, pour some petrol in to it and burn the crap out the inside.
