rusty wheel arches
« on: 09 August 2012, 22:12:28 »

Hi there,
My W reg Elite is looking a tad shoddy round its back end. The old problem of the wheel arches rusting. Called at a local body works today.. and was told its more of a restoration job!! new metal etc. and 300 to £400 (per side) was mentioned. I made a hasty retreat. Has anyone in the Mansfield/Notts area  had any similar work done and could suggest a suitable repairer. I should think the cost of repair is not much less than the cars value, but its only done 44k, and I use it mainly for towing and when I want a bit of comfort motoring. Thanks.

cut the bad bits out on mine and fiberglassed it and filler with a bit of wire mesh to make a new lip looks as good as new, just make sure you take the rubber off in side the wheel arch in side as that holds most of the rust when water gets in.

Hi Freecall,
Thanks for that. Whenever I tried repairing bodywork before I could never get a finish I was happy with, so thats why I thought about going to a pro.

what is the colour, i did mine when it was warm last year, warm weather helped with the spraying, but if you not up to spraying there are a few spray shops around that can doit, think it was £70 for back arches on mine but did it my self as weather was good, you can just see the dif but only just, tuck 7 coats of coulor and 4 coats of lacker, to mach in then left it a few weeks at t-cut it.

Got to get the angle grinder out on my wheel arches , fiberglass seems to be the only option if you cant weld so will have a go at that ... got to be better than treating with rust cure then seeing it all bubble back through  :)

I know I get a good deal from my body shop but that's extortionate! :o

FWIW, he's quoted me £100 for rusty rear arches (and that's to blend the whole rear quarter ;))

that quote sounds like what i was quoted for replacing the panels so the rust definitely won't come back. however that price simply isn't doable even if you love your omega (in my opinion).

so instead i paid £250 for it to be done and a bit of the bumper done too. but he did say it would come back. and after 6 months it is bubbling but theres no brown... just the silver bubbles. i can live with that.

its an old car, get it looking tidy and leave it at that. imo

I used a chap in Stapleford to tidy up mine including one of the rear arches which was starting to go. He did a great job at a reasonable cost.
PM me for his details, he is usually booked a couple of months in advance but worth the wait :y

could be interesting to us too, I'm looking for someone local to do the resto on my early Mk3 Cavalier - I've got the panels, but I havent got a limitless budget.....

I'm waiting for a quote from a guy in Alfreton to do 4 of our cars, most are just paintwork, but the Cavalier needs rear arches fitting, sills fitting and the 'unknown' underneath sorting.
