Can GM compete on build quality though?

I think that was the (perceived) problem with the Omega, really.. the brand just isn't perceived well enough to support the price tag compared to a similar (though less well equipped, almost certainly) Deutschebarge..

..granted it seems to be a realistic perception when I look at how much interior trim has dropped off my mates Omega (and the same bits are starting to fall off mine - the plastic backs of the front seats, for example)..
The facelift is a step backwards as far as build quality is concerned, but my PFL has worn much better than most similar aged 5/7 series I've seen, except body rust (the PFL acheles heal).

In equipment terms the next closest car of a similar vintage is perhaps the BM 7 series, over twice the price new,  and just as shabby after a few years/miles, or a pre '99 Mercedes S class which was three times the price. These are made from granite, hence the new price difference.  :-\

The only thing in my mind that lets the F/L Omega down is the coice of some of the materials, rather than the way that it's actually screwed together :y

The tactile finish is crap on the face lift interior, as was the fashion on several cars at the time.. And the rattly door pins.

Other than that, it's far superior to the pfl :)

After some googling, it seems any theory can be backed up by something found on the Internet.

Yep, as Clarkson once said, there are a gazillion trillion billion "facts" on the Internet...AND ALL OF THEM ARE WRONG! ...every single one of them.

You forgot the sunroof. The sunroof paint flakes like a Head and Shoulders user. And the glovebox. And the centre armrest. In fact the entire interior.

Yes, GM/Holden/Vauxhall can build a decent RWD saloon. Unfortunately there are so many disincentives to sell proper cars in this country that we'll never see them. Sooner or later BMW will go over to producing FWD 4pot diseasel sh1tboxes and their work will be complete. ;D

what's wrong with the Glove box? Never had a problem with it.
And the pre face lift cheap nasty fake leather centre arm rest bubbles up like a blister all on its own with bits of yellow foam poring out of it like pustule infested galloping dermatitis  ! And no drinks holder. ;D
