Head bolts unshiftable. Please help
« on: 11 August 2012, 20:38:36 »

Hi guys. As above I've finally got the camshafts out. And thought this would bethe easy bit but would take a while due to having to undo them a quarter of a turn a time etc. However the buggers just wont shift. I'm not weak. Or at least i dont think i am lol. Any help or advice you could give me would be superb. Love you all :-)

you'll need about a metre of leverage to shift them.

Keep one hand on the top of the extension (i.e. the pivot point) and gradually apply effort. You'll put quite an amount of bend into the socket extension and bar and suddenly there'll be a masive "crack" and it'll come free.

don't forget to make absolutely sure the socket has a good purchase on the screw-head

Good point (should have thought of that). Get a longer hollow bar of some kind and slip that over the breaker bar (or whatever your using) to lengthen it and give yourself more leverage. :y

Is that necessary when removing?

Yes.If the pressure isnt taken off evenly and gradually the head can warp.Particularily alloy heads.

Yup, bigger bar the better - means you can gradually apply pressure.
