LPG kit choices.. or..
« on: 13 August 2012, 22:27:58 »

Couple of questions;

Firstly - has anyone had any experience of the AEB kits that Tinley sell? (http://www.tinleytech.co.uk/acatalog/Bigas_Sequential_Gas_Injection_Systems_-_Full_Kits.html)

Secondly, doing the maths based on ~20mpg on gas vs. 22mpg on petrol it looks like a saving of ~9p a mile assuming petrol is 133.9 and gas 79.9 (around here).. So about a year to pay itself back.

But assuming 40mpg out of a similar sized, newer, Diesel car, I'd be saving 12p/mile rising to 15p/mile at 50mpg.. somewhere between those figures is probably achievable (on a motorway run, which is where my 22mpg was from on petrol) - of course it would take (much) longer to pay back given the purchase price of, say, a 525d Touring.. but on the face of it, given the Omega has ~100k on the clock and is starting to show it's age, that seems a better bet, no?

I know, I know, if I'd LPG'd it two years ago I'd be quids in by now  :-[ but then Mr Telio has done his disappearing act again now anyway...

I'm sure if a kit was ordered Tilo the shop keeper would suddenly appear.

Although Skinnytinker has had trouble getting hold of him last I heard...?

And if he can't catch him...:-\

I like your logic mate, however a drop of only 2mpg on gas is, unfortunately, dreaming  ;) :y

3.2 Omega on a careful run - 33mpg petrol, 23mpg gas...

I get 17-19mpg from my 3.2 on LPG, and around 22-23mpg on petrol.

I had 30mpg out of TBE (on petrol) and a constant 80mph from Swansea to Oxford.

If it's a 10mpg drop then I'll only get 12mpg on gas on a run! There really would be no point in doing it, at that point.. in fact, LPG would be more expensive than petrol.. (27p/mile petrol, 30p/mile gas)

I get 17-19mpg from my 3.2 on LPG, and around 22-23mpg on petrol.

That sounds more realistic, although it still makes LPG seem like a silly choice versus a diseasel car of just about any description.. besides the "better the devil you know" argument.

My 3.2 Manual regularly achieves in excess of 33mpg on petrol between Aylesbury and Gloucester.... A418, A40, A436...

(not currently running on gas much, due to an idling gremlin since manual conversion!)

An 8-10p/mile saving on LPG is about right, though, IMHO.

But... Comparing one person's MPG with another's is futile.  With LPG you will be paying about 65-70% of the cost on petrol, pretty much regardless of how you drive.

Is LPG really that expensive there? Fleet services on the M3 is 71.9.
